I absolutely loved this sweet story of young love, and I can say that it’s the first I’ve read in a very long time where I loved all the characters. It was very well-written with no noticeable spelling or grammatical errors, and pulled me into the story right away, so that I just had to keep reading until it was finished. It had some teenage drama and sadness, but what a wonderful, happy ending! Thanks to the author for an enjoyable read! I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest opinion.

3.2 stars. I appreciated the moral of the story; the message was clear but she didn't bop you on the head with it. The story could use some better copy editing, (For example, "JCPenney" missed an E consistently, and she confused "discrete" and "discreet.") though I've read much much worse on a kindle. This story had only a few characters, so it (sometimes) felt a little claustrophobic. I got tired of the boy and the mother saying that the girl, Sammy, "was like his little sister." Especially when the boy said it, since he knew better. Sammy and Brandon seemed to be well thought out (though occasionally maddening) characters; I know people who are like this. The college roommate, who was in very little of the story, also felt like a real person. I wasn't as convinced by the identical twins, who were there throughout the story; to Brandon they might seem to have the same personality, but Sammy was supposed to be their best friend from childhood so she should know them better. Another miss was the prom date who got sick, Charlie. The broad and cliché characterization of Charlie as a gay young man might have been out of a 70s sitcom (that didn't age well). Finally, the author had a bad habit of echoing Sammy's thoughts in Brandon's narration, identically, without a pause. The first couple times it happened, I thought it was cute, but the trick grew stale.

I was very disappointed in the casualness of the twins toward “sleeping”around And also their attitude towards alcohol especially as athletes. Not appreciated by me but especially in a ya book. While the main characters were charming and the setting a definite plus. Though the main characters made better choices than the twins there was no foundation made for why. A frank discussion would have been welcome. Dealing with death definitely created an easy opening for talk of afterlife if not specifically Christ. Praying would have been approach a good vehicle for further insight into the characters struggles and Perhaps encouragement and strength for them and the readers.Despite these issues, I found the stirring. What happens next?

Really enjoyed this book the end seemed a bit rush but I fell in love with the characters and would love to follow them some more. Very well written perfect for a quick read mostly because you wont be able to put this book down!

I love Julie's characters. They resonate with me. I am a runner and this was fun! It was entertaining, clean, and had a sweet twist to the plot. I would recommend this for teens and adults. As her critique partner, I had the pleasure of reading this story as it emerged. It is a great read!

This is a fantastic story. Sammys Mom hires College aged boys to help her. Sammy starts depending on Brandon. He tells everyone she is like a sister. Will that change. This is a very touching and heart tugging story. And the Author really hit it out of the ball park on bringing out the characters and there emotions. This is a definite must read. You may also need a box of tissues.Shauna Joesten

A sweet, heartfelt love story with two great characters trying to navigate the fine line between friendship and romantic feelings!

Cute little YA romance about a teen who’s crushing on her mother’s college-age gardener. Love it. And I super love the running aspect near the beach. My fave character is Brandon. And I love being in these characters’ heads. So snarky. Lol.Teens will love this quick, clean read.

From the Inside Flap

During the Cold War, Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty broadcast uncensored news and commentary to people living in communist nations. As critical elements of the CIA's early covert activities against communist regimes in Eastern Europe, the Munich-based stations drew a large audience despite efforts to jam the broadcasts and ban citizens from listening to them. This history of the stations in the Cold War era reveals the perils their staff faced from the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Romania and other communist states. It recounts in detail the murder of writer Georgi Markov, the 1981 bombing of the stations by "Carlos the Jackal," infiltration by KGB agent Oleg Tumanov and other events. Appendices include security reports, letters between Carlos the Jackal and German terrorist Johannes Weinrich and other documents, many of which have never been published.

As a security director for Radio Free Europe during critical years of the "cold war", with a broad background in all phases of "security", Rich Cummings writes a fascinating report on the intrigue, behind-the-scenes planning and violent incidents of the epoch. Those of us who lived in Europe at the time did not know what was happening around us, but Rich's book reveals the full scope of the not-so-cold war in which we participated. Excellent reading for anyone interested in US history from the 50's to the 90's, and indispensable for persons making foreign relations decisions today - lest we forget the lessons of history!

While the stories told are fascinating and the research done to support them was thorough, the author's writing style made this a difficult read. This really could have benefited from a co-author.

This book is very poorly edited, to the point where I question whether it was edited at all. The grammatical errors are a distraction, at minimum.Other problematic passages cast doubt on the accuracy of the facts. For example, there are four paragraphs providing an account about an RFE Polish Service official being sentenced to death in absentia. The events described happened over the course of several days. Three times in that short space, the year is listed as 1983 and twice as 1993. Even in the same paragraph:"On May 28, 1983, the Polish military court sentenced Najder to death for treason, in absentia, on espionage charges. RFE/RL issued a press statement that protested the charges of espionage as baseless. The next day, on May 29, 1993, the Soviet newspaper..."This book would have been far more readable, and much more useful as a historical account of many of the events described, if it had been handled better by the publisher and revised more thoroughly by the author.

It seems that Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty managed to annoy at one time or another people of virtually all political persuasions, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Senator Fulbright to Nicolae Ceausescu. That alone was probably sufficient evidence of their utility. But the sustained efforts of Communist regimes and their agents to denigrate, slander, and violently attack - including bombing and poisonings - RFE/RL and its staff serve to remind us that the institution was a powerful champion of liberty in its target areas. I knew Vlad Georgescu, the eminently civilized and cultured head of Romanian broadcasting, and saw him succumb to a brain tumour that owed to criminal poisoning. Thus there were victims of communism even in the Free World. Richard Cummings ably relates these campaigns to silence the voice of freedom. He deserves great credit for telling the story.

An interesting Cold War account, but already the Product Description about Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty allegedly broadcasting "uncensored" news and commentary gives a false impression. Censorship has a number of definitions, depending on the viewpoint of its interpreter. First, it is certainly true that the US radio station during the Cold War broke through heavy-handed Communist media censorship and corrected gross distortions in the domestic media of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, but censorship in its own ranks was not foreign to RFERL. It once had censors known euphemistically as "policy officers" whose legitimate efforts to stop violations of its own policy code in programming also resulted many times in censorship, pure and simple. Egregious censorship in later years became rare, and the mechanisms of implementing it were subtler. Second, the backgrounds of employees from Communist countries without a strong history of a free press predestined them to accept censorship with ease if they believed it benefited the US Cold War cause, which they ardently supported. Many an international comment they felt put the US in a bad light was regularly watered down when they put it into their languages for broadcast. Their censorship worked overtime during the Vietnam War when leading democratically elected politicians in Europe and elsewhere blasted the US and American aggression in Southeast Asia. The book also too easily brushes aside Communist criticism of the fact that there were a number of World War Two war criminals working for RFERL. The culprits may have got hired undetected, but their slips of tongue over the years revealed their backgrounds to their coworkers and ultimately to their American employers. However, they kept their jobs. Moreover, the book omits the problem of rabid anti-Semitism in the ranks of RFERL and also ignores the dilemma of Islamic fundamentalism embraced by the Muslim bloc at the station who let it get into their programs to the Central Asian republics of the Soviet Union. The Americans did not know then that Muslim fundamentalism was going to come back to haunt them.

Both my wife and I enjoyed this book as we were aquinted with the time and I was stationed in England and listened to Radio free Europe.

Two intersecting paths brought me to read T.S. Eliot's whimsical 1939 book of poetry, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." First, I have been reading poetry the past few weeks and was browsing the library for a short, unusual work. Second, I adopted a pet cat -- a little calico -- some months ago after more that 15 years without one. I had almost forgotten how companionable a cat could be. The new kitty inspired my reading of a so-so book or two. Then, the poetry and the cat led me to T.S. Eliot. In his book of practical cats, Old Possum, (1888 -- 1965), a great modernist poet, let his hair down. This little book, consists of 15 poems with the last one, "Cat Morgan Introduces Himself", added in 1952. The poems are short, rhythmical and rhymed. Eliot intended them for young children. They are delightful poetry in their own right with varied use of language and phrasing and poetic devices. The book became a famous musical and it is about a varied, eccentric menagerie of cats. The cats are recognizably feline and also manage to stand in for human types. The fourteen original poems tell an organized story with the first poem, "The Naming of Cats" setting the stage and the now penultimate poem, "The Ad-dressing of Cats" summarizing the story and bringing matters to a close. In between are 12 poems featuring a range of now famous cat characters.Every cat has "THREE DIFFERENT NAMES" we are told in the first poem: its given name, its particular name, and the name the cat keeps to itself. Which of the three names does Eliot use in the poems which follow? The poems tells the stories of cats with names such as Jennyanndots, the old Gumbie cat, the ill-fated Growltiger and his lady Griddlebone, and the obstinate Rum Tum Tugger. Eliot says of Rum Tum Tugger"For he will doAs he do doAnd there's no doing anything about it"!Further named cats include Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer, full of destruction and mischief, Old Deuteronomy, the GREAT RUMPUSCAT, who defuses a dog fight, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, the Mystery Cat,Asparagus, Bustopher Jones, the man about town, and Skimbleshanks, the railway cat. With the possible exception of (Aspara)gus, these names appear to be particular rather than given names of the creatures. Then, Eliot returns in the 14th poem to offer thoughts on the nature of cats, and their difference from dogs:"Before a cat will condescendTo treat you as a trusted friend,Some little token of esteemIs needed, like a dish of cream:XXXXXXX XXXXXXA Cat's entitled to expectThese evidences of respect. And so in time you reach your aim,And finally call him by his NAME."These poems are a treat to read. I was able without much effort to project them on to my cat. The poems also reminded me of my young far away granddaughters. I hope to take and read this little book to them on my next visit.Robin Friedman

The literature is great, but the size of the print and the vividness of the print are disappointing. The font size is about a 7 or an 8, and the print is so light that it is difficult to read without readers. When I sit down to read a book for relaxation, I don't want to have to squint and struggle to read the print. There is plenty of blank space in the book to have increased the font size and making the font bold would have increased the enjoyment of the read tremendously.

My wife loved it! Came from the UK to the states quickly enough and packaged well. Almost brand new condition.Random fact: If you ever watch "Logan's Run", one of the characters in the movie quotes this book (also cited at the credits at the end).

Before seeing Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical, CATS!, I researched how he was inspired to write and stage this unusual production. When I discovered the inspiration came from the very British, T.S.Eliot, I had to read his book of verse before seeing the play. How did I ever miss this delightful look at the behavior of cats? As a cat lover and an Anglophile, I loved meeting village cats while traveling in England. On a visit to the home of the Bronte's in Haworth, West Yorkshire, I met Thomas, a tuxedo cat, who lived in the village. He was owned by no one. He spent his mornings in a bed at the travel agency, where he had his breakfast, and then he moseyed over to the Bronte Historical Society Museum for his dinner and some human attention. If T.S. Eliot had met Thomas, there would have been a very British verse about him included in this wonderful volume. Buy this book for your children or grandchildren. When read by you, it will make them let go of the video game or smart phone for awhile!!!

wonderful gift for my sister who lives in the redwood forest with her identical gray cats.....she loved it. nice and old.(the book)

Excellent! Fun book to read to my kids. Wonderful wordy and rhythmic poems about cats that we read aloud before bed. Just watch out for some racist Asian references that were common in T.S. Elliot's time.

This volume was purchased as a gift for my mother and she loved it. (I also read it.) Other reviewers commented on font size issues, but neither of us noticed a problem.

I had read this book before and loved it, but when I met Boris, a real, live version of Rum Tum Tugger, I had to buy a copy to show his owner. It is amazing how little had to be done to turn these poems into a great musical comedy. I am, of course, talking about Cats. Most of the poems went directly into the show without any change whatever in their wording, and only three songs were added. Let's give full credit to Mr. Webber, It took a musical genius to do that, and one of the added songs, Memories, could stand alone as a masterpiece in any company, but most of the delight of the show comes from the wonderful feline characters created in this book.Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Gus the theatre cat, Spindleshanks, Bustipher Brown, McCavity, Mr. Mistofflees, Mungo Jerry, and Rumpleteaser all moved effortlessly from page to stage with no changes. That has to be some sort of record. If you loved Cats (the show) you need to read this book. If you love cats (the critters) you'll want to read this book. If you like poetry, you should read this book. If you like dogs, read the battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles. (You can skip over the part about the intervention of the great rumpus cat.)It was written for his godchildren, but it's a great read for everyone. It's not expensive, so get it to read to your children, but read it for yourself first.

Every cat lover should read this. Every parent should read this to their kids. Every poetry lover should read it aloud to themselves!.
