I LOVED this book! I don't get much reading done now with four kids and a retail job. But I managed to grab many short bits of time and got through almost all of it in just a month or two. The short segments in the book worked well for that.I really enjoyed the description of people and events with humor, honesty and much respect for different cultures, even when it didn't make sense to the author. She didn't just say they were different and thus, couldn't connect. Neither did she portray everything everyone did as good and justified. It seemed a very honest and appreciative description. I loved the humor. I have lived in that part of the world, but I enjoyed both getting a better picture of places I had not been and gaining a better understanding and respect for the people living there.I think this book would be a great contribution to the preparation of people going to work in that part of the world or for anyone interested in learning about different cultures.

After so much media coverage of the political situation in Sudan and Darfur, it was especially interesting to read this very personal view of the Sudanese culture and people. With a combination of humor and insight, the author takes the reader along with her as she learns how to live and work in a culture so very different from her own. The author obviously loves and respects the Sudanese; and by the end of the book, I had gained an appreciation for the Sudanese as well.

Having taken this book with me to a doctor's office, I was actually disappointed to have to stop reading, when my name was called for the appointment! I expected the book to be interesting, but it was much more than that. The great humor was unexpected! I laughed out loud several times, chuckled and smiled through many of the stories of Leoma's adventures during her years in the Sudan. Dr. Gilley gave a thorough understanding of the difficulties and hardships faced by an expatriate,while providing enilightening insight into Sudanese culture and customs. I highly recommend this book,both for personal reading and for gift-giving. Dixie M

After reading this book, I felt like I had lived in the Sudan. The humor and honest perspective made it interesting and easy to follow. It would be a great book for someone who is about to travel to another country or has done so recently. It would also be a good book for teenagers or for a family to read short segments together since it teaches lessons in diversity. The author sends all the profits back to the Sudan to help with literacy and language development in that country.

In reading Every Day But Not Some, I had expected something of a scolarly work requiring effort to read. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! Ms. Gilley has a very natural humor and a profound ability to tell a story in such a way as to make a simple story seem profound. Her narrative made me feel as if I were there too, and the people took on a reality that made me feel that I had actually met them.The inginuity of Ms. Gilley in both accomplishing her mission in Sudan, and in dealing with the daily cultural and governmental differences, gave me a high respect for her abilities under the most difficult of circumstances. But more importantly, her assimulation, to the extent possible, with the people of Sudan gave her an insight that she has managed to convey so clearly to the reader.I wholeheartedly reccommend this book as both informative and entertaining. An excellent read!

This was my first typewriter book and I now have several copies, having worn out the first one quickly. It's a pleasure to look at, informative to read, and helpful to the researcher, the collector, and the reader with just a casual interest. It has additional material on typewriter ribbon tins and other office collectibles and will provide many hours of enjoyment. You will learn a lot, without being overwhelmed or having to wade through many pages of small print. It's a fine book.

I don't collect typewriters, but I wanted to find out more regarding a Rem-Blitz (made in April 1928). Great color photos throughout, information regarding cleaning, collectors and more in this book.

WHO WOULD WANT THIS BOOKAnyone that like typewriters, is nostalgic about them, collects them or can't afford to collect them (space-wise or money-wise). This lovely book contains pictures and brief descriptions of old typewriters -- there are many beautiful and crisp photos and some brief descriptions. There's also a small appendix with other office machines (calculators, pencil sharpeners, etc).WHAT'S NICE ABOUT THIS BOOKThe pictures. Definitely the pictures. I could never tire looking at them.WHAT'S NOT NICE ABOUT THIS BOOKIt's hard to criticise what is clearly a work of love. Some people mentioned that the prices are off. But I would like to focus on other aspects; Perhaps some of these can be fixed in further editions:- There's very little treatment of foreign typewriters. This is a pity because different languages posed different mechanical challenges to typewriter manufacturers and it's nice to see how they overcame those difficulties. It's also nice to see other alphabets. :)- It would have been nice to include a sample of the text produced by each typewriter. Just to see the various typefaces. An index of typefaces/typewriters and their samples could have been nice to have as an appendix, so that people could match samples they have (old letters, notes, etc) with the typewriters that could have possibly been used to write them.- A bit more prose -- a more thorough description of the mechanical aspects of these machines would have been a nice thing to have.

Both veteran and beginners alike will enjoy Darryl Rehr's book on antique typewriters. The best feature is of course the pictures that are generally very crisp and in color. The short descriptions of each model are useful as well. This work is a handy reference, and after collecting typewriters for twenty years, I find myself always referring to it. However, as with most collector books of this type, one must use the information contained here with some reservation. For instance, nothing is footnoted, and that is a particular problem if one wishes to check information when performing research. Footnotes are sometimes the most interesting feature of a work because they can provide useful cross-references and leads to other sources that one may not have thought of. The second problem, and again this is to be expected with most collector's books, is that the prices cited for scarcer items are inaccurate even for 1997. Typewriters may not be as popular as baseball cards or antique furniture, but there is an international market for them to which prices are set. In fact, one typewriter listed as worth $5,000.00 was actually, in 1997 prices, worth at least $15,000.00 and in today's market valued between $20,000.00 and $33,000.00! My point here is that though this work is useful, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject, buyers should be aware that this is only a guide and that if he or she has a typewriter to sell, it may be wise to check beyond these pages and contact the many collectors out there for accurate pricing information (like the ones listed in the acknowledgements section at the front of the book).

I thought this book was great, regarding some complaints about price guide: It is impossible to place a standard market value on typewriters. why? 1) the market is far too small, they are not like baseball cards or comic books2) there are only a few that are actually considered rare, i cannot tell you how many olivers or underwoods i've seen listed as: "very rare"prices are are determined by the individual collector. example:i happen to like the old maroon portables, mainly royals, this means that to me they are worth more than say the more rare royal flat-bed. they are, however far from "rare".there were something like 600,000 underwood no.5's made.most of them seem to be around...

Although the book's good points are recited in the other reviews, this book has a major flaw that makes it a disaster for the beginning collector or seller of antique typewriters or ribbon tins. That flaw, that is alluded to by "Chuck", is that the prices given for the better typewriters and ribbon tins by Mr. Rehr, are absurdly low. Lets face it, one of the major reasons people buy a price guide book like this one is to learn about prices! When the pricing of the better quality items bears no relationship to reality in the marketplace such as typewriter auctions, ribbon tin mail/phone auctions, antique advertising auctions or e-Bay auctions the book is doing a great disservice to the public. Many, if not most of the better typewriters & ribbon tins are way underpriced by a factor of 4 or 5 times. For example, the Crandall typewriter is priced by Mr. Rehr at $1,000. Four of these typewriters have sold at various $7,343. This is only one of many examples I could give of low-ball pricing in this book.Buy the book for the pictures and descriptions of the typewriters but do not rely on it AT ALL as a price guide. The value guide prices could be updated, but the basic information presented is still very helpful.

My kid loves T. Rexes, and this book is super cute. The rhyme scheme is smooth and easy to read. The illustrations are cute and bright. I love Little Golden Books, and this is no exception.

We found this when our little girl (18 mo) started learning about dinosaurs at daycare. She loves it! There's enough repetition and rhyming and roaring to keep her attention and to make it fun to read out loud. I also appreciate that, as another review noted, it's "mildly educational" and not just pure fluff. Although it took my husband and me a few readings to realize the true irony of the book -- this ferocious T Rex is actually just a little guy -- that just makes it even more fun.

It's cute and funny. Before I wrapped it I read it. It made me chuckle. My son just loved it. He's starting 1st grade this fall and loves to practice his reading. There are a few dinosaur names in it though, that might be hard for a child to pronounce. So, expect them asking for a bit of help. Otherwise they should be able to read it themselves.

My kids have recently gotten into the The Golden Books and I'm slowly trying to add to the collection. Not only are these books nostalgic for me, but, also they are the perfect length and size to read bedtime stories with, take to places where I know we'll have to wait (i.e. restaurants), traveling, etc...This in particular was a special request from my dinosaur loving son. It's a sweet little book with lots of potential for funny voices to read with.

I'm a T-Rex is currently one of my Munchkin's favorite books.There's no real plot. It's simply a T-Rex explaining what he is - a big, ferocious, fighting, yet loveable T-Rex. The story has enough rhythm to make it fun to read and, when read aloud, my daughter and I have fun yelling the line "I'm a T-rex".In addition to having some very cute pictures, the book gives actual information about the T-Rex, including where he gets his name, how and when he lived, and some of the other dinosaurs that lived back then.My daughter is a beginning reader and loves reading this aloud to other people. And enjoys the look on their faces when she reads words like Cretaceous.This book is a winner!

Wonderful Illustrations. Fun book. I bought this for my 3 yo grandson. I enjoy the book as much as he does. Love the illustrations and the story line is very cute. Would recommend.

Super cute book. It has nice color pages and the story is about a trex. It has held up well to my daughter dragging it around. The pages can get torn easily by a younger child.

I’m not a huge fan of the book itself because the story is very short and a little silly, but the kid enjoys it and I guess that’s what really matters in the end.

From the tip of my tail to the top of my snout, theres just no doubt... my son loves this book. Almost every night we have story time before bed and he runs to grab this book out of the 50+ he has. He always "roars" when the book mentions T.Rex and he smiles and giggles when the mommy T.Rex makes her appearance.
