Just received this little book (my first bird field guide), and have been browsing thru, questions that come to mind are found in this book. Since my distant vision is less than desirable, several features within this book are going to be most helpful, i.e., illustrated ‘bird composite’; basic strategies for identification; Stan's own most handy classification by color coding; Stan's Notes on characteristics of habitats/locations where found in Colorado, etc.; cross-referencing when applicable, and lastly the checklist/index/page numbers. Stan Tekiela abilities and comprehensive knowledge are impressive. At some point may want more detailed information where to search in specific locations/habitats. Reviews from savvy birders include note of missing members within a couple species, but appears all that comes with a higher price tag. For now this book is more than sufficient. Am quite excited how this field guide will facilitate bird identification.

There are a lot of birds that are missing from this book. For instance, there are only two owls listed in this book, but 13 species of owl live in Colorado. Likewise, there are at least 12 species of woodpeckers in Colorado, yet this book only lists four. I realize that the book can't list every single bird of Colorado, but one would think (based on the title) that it would be more comprehensive. For the birds that are listed, there is good information. Not all birds are pictured in flight, so it's still hard sometimes to identify a bird just from this book if you've only seen it in flight.

The book is great! It includes a full page color photograph of each bird, and they actually look like the birds I've seen in the field. Where male and female look different, either the photo page is split with half page photos of each, or one fills the page and the other has an inset photo. It's arranged by color, so it's easy to find an unknown bird. Opposite the full-page color photo, the bird description includes size; descriptions of male, female, and juvenile; nest; eggs; incubation; fledging; migration; food; comparison to similar birds; and author's notes about the bird. Each description & information page also includes a small Colorado map showing the county boundaries, with color-coded ranges for summer, winter, year-round, and migration. The book is a good size for carrying around in the field, while still providing a very usable and easy-to-read format. I like the book, but I purchased a used copy and its condition was more used than I had expected.

I just love this authors field guides. Pictures are wonderful and his information is spot on. They are the easiest guides to use when traveling to quickly identify unfamiliar species state by state. They are a great size for traveling and contain just enough information to make bird identification quick and easy.

I would have liked to have seen more birds included that are staples to Colorado. One that comes to mind is the Western Scrub Jay. They are all over in our neck of the woods, but not in the book. The pictures are great, organization of them great, and simple write ups are very good. Glad I have this in my collection, just could have been more inclusive.Hutch

This book is very portable. I always put it in my backpack when going out. I got a used one, but there was few wear. I love the pictures from the book, especially when they list different pictures for male and females. The only thing I think that needs improvement is that it doesn't have a contents which indicate the classes of birds. I like the idea of categorizing them by colors, but it would also be good if there was a contents categorized by habitats or another criteria other than colors.

Great book - specifically for the area - I have the one for Florida, and use it so much that I purchased this as a gift for my daughter and son-in-law

This was recommended by a friend after he & his wife sat at our bay window for hours watching birds different than in their own state. I would agree with his recommendation, and have found the layout & organization easy & fast to use. New guests have picked it up and have been able to start utilizing it almost immediately as well.

#12,036 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I actually read this book for the thidr time during August 2016 and somehow neglected to write a review. Before I process with my review I must warn readers that I believe that it is probable that Earth was visited by Extraterrestrials who interacted and influenced humanity in the ancient past! I also believe these visits continue even today. Now for my review."Chariot of the Gods" was written neatly 50 years ago and was the first book I read to discuss the possibility of visits to Earth by extraterrestrials. I picked up the book in an Airport Bookstore just prior to my flight to Vietnam in January of 1969. I finished the book before we arrived in country and was hooked! Von Daniekan's writing style, observations, and analysis of the evidence used by mainstream science anchor theology to explain the presence of artifacts, writings and other materials, coupled with his alternative explanations and proofs were not only plausible, but also down right convincing. His writing style is conversational and non threatening. He provides the facts and asks thw reader to draw their own conclusions. To say this book was controversial in the late 1960s and early 1970s is an understatement! The amazing thing is that many of his early conclusions have gained wide acceptance with millions of people. Ancient Astronaut Theory is, in my opinion, no longer fringe science and we have Erich to thank for it!! I will leave it to you the reader to uncover the details of his findings and, if you like read his other 30 or so books on this topic to reach your own conclusions. I recommend this book to readers with an open mind and for those of you, such as myself, who are based on the evidence, not sure that main stream science and theology has got it right. I think those of you who take the time to read Von Daniekan will enjoy his work!

I grew up deeply religions even attending a very conservative religious college. I have no doubt there is a God but I believe that we have been misled by the Bible, archaeologist, and historians regarding ancient issues such as flying dragons, flying chariots, the pyramids, and other explainable events. There is too much evidence from other historical documents, including the Bible, Quoran, Jewish texts, Sumerian text, Book of Enoch, etc, that when collectively combined, show there's a much bigger picture of history. This book does a great job in taking the FACTS from all these sources to explain various phenomena from the past. Its a great read and I high recommend it...if you can read it with an open mind. At one point mankind believe the world was flat and the Sun rotated around the Earth. Similarly this book will give you a whole new perspective on the Chariots of the Gods.

This is the book that first brought the ancient alien theory to mainstream culture. It should be the first read for all ancient alien theorists. If you think the ancient alien theory is "out of this world" ridiculous, I dare you to read this book. Von Daniken doesn't just make suppositions off his own beliefs, he offers serious archaeological evidence to support his theories. If you haven't a clue what an ancient alien is, if you are an out of the box thinker, or you love archaeology &/or history, this is also a must read for you. I first read this book when I was in grade school & I still read it with the same sense of wonder.

The theories von Daniken presents in this book are very interesting.I watched the documentary series "Codes and Conspiracy" episode "Ancient astrounats" and that got me to buy this book. The theories in the book are indeed unsual and they do make a lot sense. The authors interpretations of ancient ruins, images and legends from all over the world makes sense, and I can see that there is a possibility that things did occur in the way the author portrays in this book. But, there is a lot "what if" questions in this book.If von Daniken could back up his intriguing theories with hard, concrete evidence, we would have to rewrite our history. The theories are both interesting and intriguing, but, "where is the evidence"?

Erich von Daniken had the insight and courage to research a topic which would be ridiculed by most people. He begs us to ask why and how so many ancient structures and artifacts exist around the world that is impossible to build even today. All the ancient myths and religions talk about flying gods. Where they ancient visitors or explorers from a distant planet or galaxy?

I have heard about this book for years, but until now never really thought about reading it until I watched H2's, "Ancient Aliens" series. There are different theories of our existence and learning about them is interesting. Having been raised Catholic, it can be difficult to think out of the box, but how else can we learn, explore, and seek new questions and answers. This book, and others like it, open our minds to other possibilities of our creation and our history. I understand why in 1967, this book created a stir. However, today, the questions that the book asks, do not seem so far-fetched. Even the Catholic church reaches out to the heavens (with their large telescope) to see if there are answers and knowledge to gain about what has happened in the past, the present, and the future. Sometimes, I had to read things a couple times to make sure I understood them correctly, but all-in-all it was interesting and entertaining and finished in 3 days. I will purchase other books by Erich von Daniken as long as the price is right.

There are people on here wbom discredit Von Däniken to be too "Matter of Fact" With his theories. People...They are....THEORIES! Albert Einstein published his books on Relativity PRIOR to those theories being proved physically, and some Mathematically. Great thinkers question our history and propose theories. I thought Von Däniken did a GREAT Job of keeping the reader well entertained & causing the reader to question some of the "accepted" theories which have found their way into History Books. Great Book. Can't wait 'till the next one. Danka!

#668,954 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Stephane Faroult has written perhaps one of the most important books on SQL and Relational Databases since the magisterial work of Dr. E.F. Codd. Faroult uniquely, and effectively, casts the sage teachings of Sun Tzu from "The Art of War" upon the sound theoretical underpinnings of Dr. Codd's "Relational Model for Database Management". And the result is a wonderful, entertaining, and insightful exposition of the critical success factors in modern relational database implementation. The writing is wonderful, and stunningly clear. A word of caution is necessary, though. Faroult is obviously a brilliant and experienced expert. Some of his work reflected in the corpus of this text is what we could rightly call deep and heavy. It requires serious and thoughtful contemplation. This is not a book to be read quickly. Rather, it is an important work to be studied carefully and referred to often. There were many aspects of this excellent book that I enjoyed a great deal. His initial chapter on "Laying Plans", Designing Databases for Performance, is one of the best single chapters I've ever read in a technical book. And his final chapter, "Employment of Spies", Monitoring for Performance, was also great. I personally savored Faroult's sage teaching that a sound relational design was the factor most dispositive of success in making modern databases work as described in the first chapter. But I was absolutely delighted that Faroult both headed his final chapter with a quote from the Gospel according to Saint John and included the value of syllogistic logic in his excellent arguments in this final chapter. In short, the book is great. Faroult is much to be applauded for this excellent work. His book should occupy an honored place in the library of any professional seriously involved in SQL development and design. God bless.

I got this for my dad. He's been writing programs for about 15 years. This book still had useful information in it for him despite his high skill level. Very high quality book

The rare book on SQL that goes beyond what we've already figured out by hard knocks. The author has a wonderful mix of theory and practice, and shows how procedural realities affect the relational ideals of data access in a relational database. The chapter on nested data structures is so clear that it makes the topic seem self-evident, so, while simplified, you get a solid picture of what's happening before having to 'attack' an overly-messy real-world project. It truly makes a developer using SQL feel like s/he has the upper hand, the inside track, and the secret touch!

Probably most database solution developers and DBAs have picked up their knowledge of the subject as they have needed it, rather than in a formal and structured (so to speak) method. And even those that have had a structured education probably learned a lot more while in the field. And so there are always gaps. Gaps in technique, but also gaps in the why of many things that I, for example, took for granted about large DBMS's and SQL.This book handily fills in those gaps. It assumes a moderate to advanced foundation in SQL and DBMS, and then takes off from there. It is mostly prose with some code and SQL sprinkled throughout, but if you have a foundation, you can flesh out the technique. It is like listening to a graduate level lecture. It is distilled wisdom more than How To, and the more you bring to the material, the more you will get from it. And every page is rich with information. I don't feel like I have wasted my time on any one page, as I often do in the how to manuals.Definitely an advanced piece.

This is a book in a somewhat-similar vein to Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series): it spends most of its time shining light on the dark nooks and crannies of database design and query optimization, and assumes that you've already at least learned that those dark nooks and crannies exist. It is also written with the database programmer in mind, rather than the database administrator. There are not many books written for us, and I'm really pleased that one of them is a book this excellent.

This book really explains concepts I knew about but did not fully understand. It can be applied to any of the major databases out there. I would highly recommend it if you are modeling your own database, or if you are working with existing databases and you need to understand how to use indices. I really enjoyed the discussion of the pros and cons of using indices as well as other topics like partioning. Overall, this book is worth owning.

Imagine a cookbook with no recipes but after you read it it helps to become a better cook. This book does not specifically tells what to do. It does not have codes or technical jargon. It gives you an understanding. The book reads well, it is not full of technical references but it is not to say this book is for someone who does not know the workings of a DBMS. The author draws a relevant parallel between designing a database and waging a war. I enjoyed the quotes thoughtfully peppered in the book. Do me a favor and do not get it...in case we are going after the same job

A great, implementation neutral, introduction to relational databases. Perfect both for people new to databases, and those who've been working with them for a while, and want to know more of the depths in which they're working.
