Just received this little book (my first bird field guide), and have been browsing thru, questions that come to mind are found in this book. Since my distant vision is less than desirable, several features within this book are going to be most helpful, i.e., illustrated ‘bird composite’; basic strategies for identification; Stan's own most handy classification by color coding; Stan's Notes on characteristics of habitats/locations where found in Colorado, etc.; cross-referencing when applicable, and lastly the checklist/index/page numbers. Stan Tekiela abilities and comprehensive knowledge are impressive. At some point may want more detailed information where to search in specific locations/habitats. Reviews from savvy birders include note of missing members within a couple species, but appears all that comes with a higher price tag. For now this book is more than sufficient. Am quite excited how this field guide will facilitate bird identification.
There are a lot of birds that are missing from this book. For instance, there are only two owls listed in this book, but 13 species of owl live in Colorado. Likewise, there are at least 12 species of woodpeckers in Colorado, yet this book only lists four. I realize that the book can't list every single bird of Colorado, but one would think (based on the title) that it would be more comprehensive. For the birds that are listed, there is good information. Not all birds are pictured in flight, so it's still hard sometimes to identify a bird just from this book if you've only seen it in flight.
The book is great! It includes a full page color photograph of each bird, and they actually look like the birds I've seen in the field. Where male and female look different, either the photo page is split with half page photos of each, or one fills the page and the other has an inset photo. It's arranged by color, so it's easy to find an unknown bird. Opposite the full-page color photo, the bird description includes size; descriptions of male, female, and juvenile; nest; eggs; incubation; fledging; migration; food; comparison to similar birds; and author's notes about the bird. Each description & information page also includes a small Colorado map showing the county boundaries, with color-coded ranges for summer, winter, year-round, and migration. The book is a good size for carrying around in the field, while still providing a very usable and easy-to-read format. I like the book, but I purchased a used copy and its condition was more used than I had expected.
I just love this authors field guides. Pictures are wonderful and his information is spot on. They are the easiest guides to use when traveling to quickly identify unfamiliar species state by state. They are a great size for traveling and contain just enough information to make bird identification quick and easy.
I would have liked to have seen more birds included that are staples to Colorado. One that comes to mind is the Western Scrub Jay. They are all over in our neck of the woods, but not in the book. The pictures are great, organization of them great, and simple write ups are very good. Glad I have this in my collection, just could have been more inclusive.Hutch
This book is very portable. I always put it in my backpack when going out. I got a used one, but there was few wear. I love the pictures from the book, especially when they list different pictures for male and females. The only thing I think that needs improvement is that it doesn't have a contents which indicate the classes of birds. I like the idea of categorizing them by colors, but it would also be good if there was a contents categorized by habitats or another criteria other than colors.
Great book - specifically for the area - I have the one for Florida, and use it so much that I purchased this as a gift for my daughter and son-in-law
This was recommended by a friend after he & his wife sat at our bay window for hours watching birds different than in their own state. I would agree with his recommendation, and have found the layout & organization easy & fast to use. New guests have picked it up and have been able to start utilizing it almost immediately as well.
