Although the book begins in the United States, the story predominately occurs in the Far East and follows that traditional genre with stories mixed with Buddhist fables. Thus making the work very different to those accustomed to a Western cultural approach. So, from my personal perspective, the book seems overly long, too full of coincidences, and too mystical (for lack of a better word). It was not a wasteful read, but rather one that lacks complete satisfaction especially in the light of its Western origins.
I'm not sure why this was a best-seller. The first couple of chapters seemed lame but I got through them. The remainder of the book never drew me in--it's as though I was just listening to someone tell me their story. Even if you account for "cultural differences," some of this story didn't make sense. It really could have been so much more and I don't understand why this made a best-seller list.
This book has the potential to change lives. I know that's a bit of a cliche, but this book has changed the way I feel about the most powerful force in the universe; (another cliche, I know) LOVE. Beautifully written, I cried my eyes out--happy, touching and heartbreaking all at once.
A very sweet love story that also gives an insight into Burmese culture. I liked the characters and their love story, but found the ability of the blind character to navigate around the village (with mountain paths no less) a little hard to believe. However, book was an enjoyable read and it did make me think about how my hearing, seeing, and touching affect my own view and experiences in the world. What a lovely thought to be able to distinguish our loved one's heartbeats.
Recommended to me by a dear friend, I started this book slowly and deliberately, acclimating to an unknown era and setting as the narration drew me in to the story. It has left me melancholy yet unsettled. Without spoiling the ending, I sense that the author's purpose includes leaving the reader feeling this way deliberately. A beautiful tale with riveting characters and enough stark human nature and spiritual mystery to make it a treasure. I kept one star for myself.
I wish I could give this book 10 stars! It is one of my top 3 favorite books of all time! This is a story about a young woman who goes in search of her father, who has disappeared. The author is really able to paint a picture of the father's life before he came to the United States, and tell such a touching story of love and adventure. I thought this was an amazing, satisfying story!

I was worried that the story might be too sappy, too precious to enjoy, but I was proven wrong. While romance is at the heart of the book (no pun intended), there are so many other things at play as well--happiness, sadness, betrayal, courage--that I was completely immersed. Jan-Philipp Sendker has created a memorable story with wonderful characters whose vividness had me seeing their story unfold before my eyes. I really loved this book.
