I didn’t realize till half way through… that his name all of a sudden sounded so familiar… I then checked and he was the author of “Tiger Force†which I as an Honorably Discharged Viet Nam Era Veteran… read 12-13 years ago… and was one of the first reviews I ever wrote and posted on Amazon. Jack and Mitch are a great team and this book is truly exhilarating to read!

I love True Crime books and this one didn’t disappoint. I knew who ‘El Chapo’ was by name and occupation, but this book was great in explaining the cartel, who was involved and how long it took to hunt him down.I thought the details and timeline of the book were easy to follow, the storyline connected well and I appreciate that it was narrated by an intelligence officer.Not only do you learn about ‘El Chapo’ and his cartel, but the novel did a really great job of talking about the drug epidemic as the crisis it is, but also explaining how we are trying to get ahead of it.This novel was educational, interesting and a powerful story that really paints a picture of what our future could look like, in regards to drugs. It’s good to know that there are people and agencies out there that are trying to fight as hard as possible for us and to clean it up before it gets worse and that is truly amazing.
If you are interested in the behind the scenes story of what it took to arrest El Chapo Guzman, then read Drug Warrior: Inside the Hunt for El Chapo and the Rise of America’s Opioid Crises by Jack Riley. What makes this book interesting is that it is from the vantage point of the DEA Agent that started the crusade to arrest El Chapo. Jack Riley’s career spanned over 30 years and much of that time he was on the quest to arrest El Chapo. He was so determined, that he made a vow not to retire until he arrested El Chapo. Mr. Riley did not hide his dislike for El Chapo, so much so, that he conducted press conferences and interviews regarding his desire to arrest him and bring down his empire and in return, El Chapo put a hit on Mr. Riley. Definitely a must read book to see the steps that it took to take down Chicago’s number one most wanted man.
Poorly written. Turgid. One of few books I could not finish. I made it about half way through. Also author comes across as very heavy drinking blowhard.
Fast-paced and highly important; touches on crucial issues in the “war on drugsâ€. The author was at the top of the DEA and shares a lot of that inside knowledge which impacts the book in a positive way. Sometimes I’d wish for more details from the Mexican agents on the ground when he talks about El Chapo’s capture; because of the Author’s position it seems that with regard to his capture he was a bit “too high up†to provide a lot of details. Nevertheless it is a great read and I finished this book in two settings.
This was one of the best true crime books I have read. Usually they sort of drag by, taking forever to get to the good parts of the story. This book was engaging the entire time, and a great read.
