I'm thinking about getting a little pet, possibly a dwarf hamster, so I got this book. It has sections on "Introduction to Dwarf Hamsters," "Before You Buy," "Understanding Your Dwarf Hamster," "Accommodations," "Feeding Your Dwarf Hamster," "Health," "Raising Dwarf Hamsters," "Species-Specific Breeding Facts," Breeding for Coat Colors and Textures," and "Information."Having read this 110 page book with loads of cute pictures of hamsters, I'm now certain that a Dwarf Hamster would be a good pet for me, and I know what species I want, what gender, how many, what sort of a hamster-house I need, what to feed them, how to handle them, what sort of care and cage-cleaning I'm in for, and what not to do with them. In other words, I'm all set.I would recommend you buy this book BEFORE you adopt a dwarf hamster, because you will be all set up for the little fella BEFORE you bring him home. Works better for you and the hamster.

I just finished reading this book from cover to cover. Loved it. I got it because of the great reviews, and because I got a dwarf hamster for the first time, and had only had the classic Syrian hamsters as a child. The author did a great job about giving details for each species of dwarf, as opposed to talking about them as one homogeneous group, like other books. They really do have their differences. I'll let you read the other reviews to see more about all that the book covers. It seems geared towards the adult or older teenage pet owner, though you can probably tell that from reading some of the pages in the "Click to Look Inside" Amazon feature.I think one important thing the reviewers haven't covered yet is the author's credentials. You can read them all on page 111 when you do the "Look Inside". Go to the back cover first, and then flip back a few pages. In short, the author has a D.V.M (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine), and a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Univ of California at Davis. Dr. Vanderlip has "provided veterinary care to exotic and domestic animal species for more than thirty years...authored twenty books on pet care....served as Clinical Veterinarian for the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine...." [on and on], has served as Chief of Veterinary Services for NASA, and even does seminars. Not only that, but apparently her husband, who is "an expert in laboratory and exotic animal medicine" has also helped her obtain recent scientific info. The book is copyrighted 2009 and 1999. So, yeah, it seems pretty darn up-to-date.

What makes a good book about hamsters? Lots of PICTURES. And this book has plenty! Cute little dwarfies smiling, dancing doing back flips, playing basketball and being cuuuute! Photographs, not just drawings. I think the best part of it is that the only hamsters that are drawn are the sick or injured ones. That way you never get to see an actual hamster in bad condition. Photos of animals that have been injured can be disturbing, especially for dwarf hamster-obsessed people like me. There are like 4 or 5 drawings only, and LOTS of photos. Tons! I love this book!Even though it's pretty thin, this manual is close to complete. It focuses on the everyday pet owner, not just on breeders. There are not too many home remedies, it mostly recommends taking your pet to the vet. The section on recuperating a lost hamster is smart. Valuable information. It doesn't go too technical but it tells it just like it is. No kiddie speak. Also, most of the hamsters pictured are gray, just like my own Campbell's dwarf. That has made the book so much more enjoyable. There's a section on how to distinguish between 4 types of dwarf hamsters.Get this book! You will want to eat it!

Really informative and well written, from a trustworthy source. It's nice to have that when there's so much misinformation out there. Also the photos are amazing and adorable!

Great book for all hamster owners. Interesting to know about the various dwarf hamsters. Very helpful!

My hamster loving son loves the photos. I like all the information AND the photos. A very informative book. Who knew that there is such a difference between dwarf hamsters and regular hamsters. I just thought that the dwarfs were a smaller version.

I had hamsters for many years, and i am not saying this to brag. i know a lot about hamsters and some small details there are not entirly true. for example, it says that you should never put a hamster in a ball to run. i disagre but part of what they are saying is the reason is true. read the book to know the reason. overall, the book is ensecure, but nice. but if you buy it dont follow everything they say or just buy some other bookl. again this is only my opinion.

I love this book. Before we got a dwarf hamster, we did lots of research and this book was a great addition to usual internet searches. Great information on the different varieties of dwarf hamsters readily available. We were able to go to the pet store armed with knowledge (you never know if your pet store's staff are truly knowledgeable or not). We decided on a Winter-White dwarf hamster and just love him. I'm sure we'll continue to reference this book as questions come up.

Another great start to a bookish cozy mystery series. I love that CGI plays a role in this series. I don't think a lot of people (unless you watch NCIS) even realize they exist. I wish I could visit Bayside Books and the castle. The settings in cozy mysteries always sound so picturesque and beautiful. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Trouble on the Books has an intriguing premise with a bookshop in an old castle on an island (love it). Shelby Cox is twenty-nine years old and has been working as an editor for Masspike House in Massachusetts. When Aunt Edie needs Shelby’s assistance, she takes a leave of absence and returns to Alexandria Bay. Shelby is living on a houseboat until winter and managing the new satellite location of Bayside Books on Blye Island inside the historic Blye Castle (it would have made more sense to live with Aunt Edie who needs her help getting around). I knew Loreena Swan would end up dead after the altercation with Shelby and the way she treats the volunteers at the castle. The murder occurs early in the book. There is little investigating by Shelby until later in the story when Shelby asks various people questions (people she does not know). I wish the mystery had been more of a focus with more complexity. I found it a snap to solve this crime. Shelby’s attention is split because she is determined to learn more about her mother. Her father would not discuss her mother who died when she was three, and Shelby is hoping to learn more about her from the people that knew her in town plus Edie. Shelby is searching the local cemeteries for her mother’s grave. I was curious why Shelby did not research her mother online (death certificate would pop up). The pacing of the book was lethargic which made it hard for me to stay interested. The author is a detail oriented which slowed down the pace (an example is making tea—getting the kettle, filling it with water, putting in on the stove, turning on the stove, etc.). Add in a daydreaming main character with a significant amount of internal dialogue and repetition of information. Shelby also has trouble remembering people’s names and figuring out a person’s age (makes it hard for a reader). She states she is not a people person, but Shelby is working in a bookshop frequented by tourists (an oxymoron). I felt that Trouble on the Books needed more pizzazz (oomph). The characters failed to come alive for me. We are not given many details on them which I found disappointing. I hope the characters will be fleshed out more in the next installment. I did enjoy the descriptions of the castle, island and bookshop. Trouble on the Books could have benefited from further editing (there are inconsistencies). A Castle Bookshop Mystery series has potential which I hope the author will achieve.*I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book. I am not required to write a review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own!

Book one in a new series. My rating: 2 of 5 stars, it was just okay.I really wanted to love this book. A bookstore, in a castle? Sounds perfect, right? But I found myself losing interest in it, it was so slow. It starts off with a murder pretty much right away, so I thought it would be fast paced. It dragged. And I really had a hard time connecting with Shelby, though I don't know quite why. It's also pretty laughable that people in a small town would tell a newcomer like Shelby anything more than they would tell the actual people in charge of the investigation.I'd be interested in giving book 2 a chance, but it certainly goes on my library list.*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book given to me by the publisher, via NetGalley.*

Dollycas’s ThoughtsHer aunt has just had knee surgery so Shelby Cox arrives in Alexandria Bay to help manage her aunt’s bookstore and open a satellite store in the castle on Blye Island. She is surprised when her aunt informs her that she, in fact, owns fifty-percent of Bayside Books. She has a lot to learn but she is surrounded by a great staff. The island is a popular tourist attraction so her main focus is getting the castle bookshop open as before the tourists start arriving by the busload. After a busy grand opening Shelby is excited about her new life as a bookseller. That is until she finds a dead body floating in the Grotto. She knows immediately that it is the prickly volunteer coordinator for the Castle. The police quickly peg Matthew Kessler, the Castle caretaker as their prime suspect. When the Coast Guard gets involved Shelby starts to think the murder may be linked to smuggling, something the island was used for during Prohibition. She can’t stop herself from sticking her nose into the investigation much to the dismay of Coast Guard Special Agent Zack Griffin. She is determined to solve the case and Zack is determined to keep her safe. The setting of this story grabbed my attention right away. A bookshop in a castle on one island that is part of the Thousand Islands area off New York. A truly perfect setting for a cozy mystery series.Shelby Cox is an interesting protagonist. She has her work cut out for her. She admits she isn’t a people person and knows that has to change if she is going to be a success in her new profession. She is curious, a trait every amateur must have. She is also intelligent and detail oriented so I know she is going to succeed in both of these endeavors. In addition to trying to solve a murder, Shelby hopes to learn more about her mother. She was quite young when she lost her and has so many questions.Ms. Lang has surrounded Shelby with a great supporting cast. Aunt Edie was my fave. She is a strong woman too who hates being still and away from her shop. Her recovery is moving quickly and I am excited to get to know her better when she isn’t hindered at all. Romance is two-fold in this story. Caretaker Matthew Kessler is very important to Edie and Agent Zack appears to be very interested in Shelby. The murder happens early in the story. Shelby’s first investigation is a bit clunky as to be expected, it is her first, but it messed with the story flow in places. When she found her rhythm so did the story. Clues fell into her path and the twists and turns kept her and the reader guessing. The subplot of Shelby’s mother blended in nicely, but I must confess I was almost more interested in it than murder. I feel this is a credit to the author because I was invested in her main character and cared about her and her feelings very early in this first book. She has left so much room for all the characters to grow. This is a fine start for this series. Endearing characters drew me in and their lives and the mysteries thrown into their paths kept those pages turning. I am excited to learn more about these characters and to see what the author has in store for them next.

#8,093 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Thiis is definitely not a "feel good" read! I purchased the book based on previous reviewers and a desire to learn more about the history of the West that I love. The book certainly does that, but at the same is very upsetting to learn more details of the shameful ways the Nez Pearce were treated. Before reading, I thought I was very sympathetic to the plight of the American Indian, but now have a much deeper understanding of the truly horrible way they were treated. Chief Joseph rises to become a heroic leader, but not in the sense that I had expected based on my very mislead understanding of history. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to understand both sides of early settler / Indian history.

It's obvious that Kent Nerburn has thoroughly researched his subject, more so than the simple excuse that traditional North American history offers. He should be applauded for his work, as it's obvious that he has spent a significant amount of time and effort on its creation. But the story he tells is so much more than facts and figures, though that information is offered also in this well-written tale. This "story" covers the humanity of his subject and that of the various people involved and the things they believed in, the ideas and creeds that they fought for or died for, and they were far more than text book history. For this is a tale both of the land and of the people who lived in it prior to the western expansion as well as the people who moved in and settled. It's a truth of what we were, and who we are now and the land we now occupy, and in it's telling, offers a lesson we never seem to fully grasp. The story is thought provoking, as well as entertaining. I would recommend his book to anyone who holds an interest in the man Joseph, the man Chief Joseph or the world he and the Nez Perce walked in at the beginning of what is now the United States America.

Our public school systems are replete with mandatory reading assignments . While I support the public school systems, our list of works designated as mandatory reading needs an update. Too many of these books glorify or pertain to anglo, European, and/or greek heritage and ideas. I don't know of any that tell of the First People the American Continents. The United States white "civilization " has destroyed and/or subjugated native peoples or people of color since they first landed here. This book tells the story of the Nez Perce. This is the ancient group of First Peoples that friended Lewis and Clark. Without the Nez Perce, that expedition would have failed. This book tells the story of how white america destroyed the Nez Perce and it should be mandated reading in our high schools.

An excellent book about the Nez Perce and the role of Joseph in the attempt of one group to escape from forced relocation to a reservation. It is well-balanced, giving both the view of various Nez Perce groups, the army officers pursuing them, and the reporting that made Jospeh a legend. It is very well written and I highly recommend it.

A five star rating for a five star book. Well researched and presented in an unbiased historical context, this book gets 5 stars due to its ability to capture the essence of a people's suffering. The single thread that ran throughout this book is the author's ability to transport this reader and make me feel as if I was there.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American history, Native American history, or anyone simply interested in one example of how the original owners of North America were pushed aside to create a new country.

I became curious about Chief Joseph when I traveled on the Chief Joseph highway on the way to Yellowstone Park. The book was a very revealing look at the struggle between the Nez Perce tribe and the settlers trying to populate the West in the 1800s. The misinformation and lack of understanding of the Indian ways showed a side of the conflict not often told. How the government handled this conflict during the war and after the Nez Perce were defeated, showed a very sad, harsh reality. It gave me a whole new perspective on the establishment of reservations, how Treaties were signed and imposed, the hierarchy in the native culture, and the way of life that was changed drastically by confining Indians to reservations. I found the story very compelling and the life of Chief Joseph, as the face of the Nez Perce, a detailed insight into the struggles and flight of a people driven from their homeland to have their lives forever altered.

living in this area, washington state, I found this book eye opening and learn much of chief joseph that I did not know, any one interested in actually history of the nez perce tribe I would recommand this book,, a part of american history that was lost but found

The author tells the devastating story of an Indian tribe the Nez Perce. The story focuses on Joseph who was one of the chiefs. We sometimes think how savage the Indian tribes were but we seldom see how life was from the native perspective. The U.S. Government, Army, and the settlers tried to force the Indians to become "civilized" by doing away with all of the old life, moving them out of the land they had always lived on, breaking promise after promise. The story is very readable but does relate the facts of documented history.
