I wish I read this book years ago. I love reading coaching / personal development books. Definitely an insightful view of how coaching girls is different than coaching boys with stories from the author's career coaching the US Women's National Team supporting the lessons learned; as well as some lessons he learned while raising his own kids. Definitely not a soccer tactics book, it is a book geared for anyone coaching girls in sports or any other genre. I appreciate this book as much as Rinus Michels, Bill Walsh, Pep Guardiola, and Urban Meyer.

This was an invaluable book for me as I transitioned from coaching boys to girls. As a former Division 1 player, I was very nervous about how naïve I was as I started coaching girls. I read this before the season started & it reduced my anxiety levels dramatically! Turned out their was little to be worried about, but I owe this book a lot of credit for the success I had w that team over the next few years. I especially appreciated Tony's discussion of how most girls view their team/social peers as an interconnected web, vs the hierarchy or totem poles that boys often perceive. Very helpful w both team-building & also individual player interactions. Very highly recommended for coaches of girls at nearly any age.

I think it goes without saying, but coaching a group of ten 14 year old girls in volleyball is always a challenge. You never know from day to day what you're going to have to deal with when you get to the gym. I've been coaching girls for 12 years on and off and I've learned a lot about how to communicate and what to say and not say. Of course, there are still many, many things I do not know or understand. Reading this book has given me a clear understanding of the path I need to take every season to make sure a) the girls give me the best they have, and b) they have fun doing it. The lessons Tony goes through in this book and the examples he gives can be applied to any age group with some modifications, but the underlying goals are the same. I really enjoyed reading this book and see myself re-reading it many times to reinforce my methodolgies. Yes, this book is obviously geared toward soccer, but it is completely relevant for any sport where young women are involved. Highly, highly recommended.

Good book on Tony’s insight into his sucess as a coach. More of a biography then a coaching aid. Some interesting team building exercises that I use.

Mia Hamm said "Treat us like women, coach us like men." Tony DiCicco really helps me focus on not only the playing and fieldset game for the teenage girls I coach but also on their mental game. I grew up watching the team he speaks about - with awe and desire to be as good as them. These players are the icons of the beginning of women's soccer in America. Tony DiCicco, as their coach, helps deliver true insight in how to coach women and girls through this book. A high recommendation for any girl's coach.

I have read this book several times since buying on Amazon.com. I have also purchased a few copies for fellow coaches. There is great insight into Tony's experiences coaching top-level girls who have all the same insecurities as club level girls. There is also great insight into the drills Tony used to create a well bonded team. I have used many of these tips for my team and it has been very successful. I highly recommend this book if you are coaching or plan on coaching female soccer players. It will only make you better.

This is the second copy of this book I've bought. I misplaced (or loaned out) my other copy and just had to get another copy so I could reread it. It would be a wonderful gift for a coach new to coaching girls. Coaching girls is very different from coaching boys -- especially in the pre-teen/teen years. Tony D. offers some wonderful insight on the differences and how to handle them.(Recently got my copy signed by Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tisha Venturini-Hoch, too!)

Awesome book. If you coach girls, read this book. I put tabs on pages of books that I want to remember. I should have tabbed the pages I didn't want to remember in this book, it would have been easier. Thanks for the insight Tony.

Review

"No book can be more helpful than this one in guiding pastors and lay people to come to greater clarity about what they really believe about God. Guides us in critical reflection in a way in which all can participate. At once genuinely popular and genuinely theological."―John B. Cobb, Jr., professor emeritus, Claremont School of Theology"Titillating ... an adventure in 'metaphor wondering' and in multidimensional faith."―Rev. Dr. Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner, professor of pastoral care, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University“A treasure house of word pictures, some conventional and some outrageously original. A testimony to the inveterate need, on the part of humanity, to connect with God.”―Rabbi Neil Gillman, professor of Jewish thought, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America“Lays out the implications of our choices of metaphors for the Divine and expands our minds with practiced and practical suggestions. A must for all who wish to leave parochial worlds!”―Nancy Corcoran, CSJ, Catholic chaplain at Wellesley College; author, Secrets of Prayer: A Multifaith Guide to Creating Personal Prayer in Your Life“Scholarly and accessible … will help seminarians and seekers, professors and pastors explore new ways to talk about the Divine. Deftly compels the reader to continually nuance the mystery and complexity of our God―no matter what our faith tradition. A book we've been waiting for!”―Marsha Foster Boyd, president, Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit

If you are looking for theology in an genuinely exploratory mode, this is a great book.Bohler focuses on some of the metaphors we do (or might) use to understand God, rather than on some set of metaphors we "ought" to use. Thus, while there is some attention to the old, familiar images, such as Father, Rock, Divine Potter, etc., the author's deepest and most interesting thinking is in developing new ones: God the Bright Night Light, the Nursing Mother, the Jazz band leader, and as a coach (to name just a few). There is an ENORMOUSLY helpful checklist in the appendix for individuals or groups to use as a way of clarifying their own metaphors and the theology behind them -- and it asks how strongly you believe each one, which is a significant addition that spurs a lot of discussion. The checklist alone would be worth the price of the book for the busy pastor or harried group leader scrounging for resources at the last minute. For more conservative or traditional types, I suspect this may be a bad fit (although I say that as a progressive). God as Divine Mother has to be o.k. for you. (Though the book itself would try to get you thinking about why you have such a stake in one gender over the other. A good question...but not everyone's cup of tea.)As a way of doing theology, the book's emphasis is squarely on helping people find language for how they're seeing and experiencing God now -- it's based on an inductive, relational, process-oriented way of thinking and shies away from definitive answers.I'm currently using it for a confirmation class and we've all loved it.My students feel like they're getting permission to talk about the God they know, and not marching orders about the God they're supposed to believe in. A lot of wonderful discussion has come from it. So has a lesson that our relationship with God and the metaphors we use to know God can change. Many have already had that experience, even though they are young. Now they know that this is not only o.k., but normal. It works well with teens and adults. A particular note for those raised in an atmosphere of toxic religion: this book could be exhilarating but terrifying.Progressive Christians should ABSOLUTELY buy this book.

This book makes you think outside the box and look at God in new ways. I can be a great teaching and preaching tool. Young people would definitely like the examples given in the box.

This book stretches the imagination in the way we think about God and relate to God.

Basically I thought "why was this book written?" Not for people who have a faith and have lived most of their life.

Metaphors are like keys that open our minds to new understandings in insights. This is particularly true when we are dealing with God since man has never been able to directly see or comprehend God. In God the What?, author Bohler makes a very strong case for the importance of metaphor in our discussion about God. How we visualize and talk about the divine greatly influences how we relate to God. The conversations that she inspires are extremely important and open the reader's conscience to new concepts and visions of God. This is an excellent, well written book for anyone who is willing to ask questions and search for answers.

Lively and engaging throughout, Carolyn Bohler draws from her life as a seminary professor, a pastor and a mother to give us hundreds of ways to think about God. This is an excellent read for inidividuals and a easy-to-use resource for pastors or small group leaders in churches. Indices of scriptures and metaphors are provided as well as discussion guides and reflective questions. As Prof. John Cobb says, "No book can be more helpful than this in guiding pastors and lay people to come to greater clarity about what they really believe about God."

If we're talking about God, we HAVE to use metaphors. This book explores various metaphorical ways of trying to understand God, which only helps you be conscious of the metaphors--and the possibly LIMITING metaphors--we use to think about the nature of God.

Who would have thought that the two most popular girls in Riverdale could be witches, though the way they handle Archie is nothing short of magic. Sabrina puts her trust in someone she has just met and puts herself and everyone else in danger. The story is getting darker with every episode and I cannot wait for each new revelation. Sabrina is sweet and dark in turns something that gives her a lot more remission then she had before.

I really hate writing reviews. The retro style illustration seems to take inspiration from classic pinups in the renderings of Betty and Veronica, namely Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page respectively. The story arc is taking an even darker twist, so it should be interesting to see how it plays out.

I thought this was a very interesting story, with a very interesting a typical and very true too her game, I enjoyed this very much.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves great character development and tense, morally ambiguous storylines. It's a great read!

The Ceremony is over, Harvey is dead. Now it’s time to find out who is to blame. Sabrina is on trial before the council. She must pass several tests that seem impossible. But Sabrina has a secret, she made a deal with another witch unbeknownst to her aunts or the council. Now that the trial is over, it’s time for her to get Harvey back. Can she do it with her new witch friends help? What unforeseen consequences will occur due to her choices. This story is very good, I am really enjoying this series even though it’s a bit too detailed in the demonic and a bit too dark at times for my tastes, but it’s just that damn good.I am absolutely in love with the artistry. I’m so glad they haven’t changed artists and the art style and seriously hope they don’t.Available DRM Free via Comixology.

I binged on the first 8 issues. They were all great. I just love the artwork so much. I get drawn into the story (no pun intended). I was surprised when I read how long it actually is in between each issue. Being able to binge in one evening is really some kind of honor.

This is definitely a darker retelling of Greendale and Riverdale. I did not know that the Archie comics universe and the Sabrina the Teenage Witch universe overlapped. Definitely a lot of occult and satanic ritual stuff again, so warning to all the religious people out there that this may not be for them.

The dead oedipal object if desire arises, beware the want needed and desire met, this issue is full of surprises, the request no jest to baphomet.
