But rebel forces destroyed his childhood innocence when they hit his village, driving him to leave his home and travel the arid deserts and jungles of Africa. I knew about the boys being used as soldiers in Africa,but this was a dose of what it is really like. The truth of the matter is we are all capable of what these young boys end up doing, given the circumstances. If we are raised with love it is natural to love and if we are raised to hate, it is more natural to hate. Look at the Muslim extremists. Their lives focus on hate on a day to day basis. It becomes very easy to kill and means nothing. This is how people lose their souls. It is hard enough for people to recover from participating in a just war, but the slaughter these kids are raised with is a nightmare and it is a miracle if any recover emotionally and spiritually. I was grateful this young man has survived, regained his soul, and lived to tell about it. I pray that this will happen to all the other youngsters.

A Long WayGone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier is by Ishmael Beah. I was asked to read this book by a Mother whose child was required to read it over the summer. She wanted my view of the book. The book deals with child soldiers in Sierre Leone in the 80’s and 90’s. I found this book hard to deal with. The graphics of the rebel soldiers is too graphic. I question having this book or similar ones read over the summer by students. I feel it should be read in class with explanations for the students handy. The topic is definitely one that should be read and talked about by students today. Reading it alone with no chance to talk about it is a disservice to the students.Ishmael tells his story is a very straightforward way and in that manner shows his innocence and how it is taken from him. In his search for his family, he shows his innocence in comparison to what is going on around him. Even as he gives up on finding his family. His need and hope to survive is at the base of his actions.

I can't absolutely love a story like this. Heart-breaking, horrifying. I commend Beah with sharing his life in a way that challenges but isn't unnecessarily gruesome. The depths of evil...for what? The problem with mindless greed is that there is no goal, only lust, no victory, no need to better oneself, no ability to appreciate or even realize when the terrifying game is over. Instilling a desire to hurt others for immediate gratification makes us less than human. Crawling out of the pit and shining a light on evil makes Beah better than heroic.

Given the subject matter it feels almost wrong to not give this book a solid 4 or 5 star review, but to be honest I give it a solid 3.5I would've liked this memoir to include some brief history and background on the nature of the war. I took the time to look this up myself but I think it would've brought some more clarity and enriched the book some to have included this information.I know in the back the chronology was included but I was looking more for an answer as to why this war was occuring.I liked how he ended the book with the story his grandfather's friend used to tell but I wish beforehand he would've elaborated more on getting to New York and setting up a life there and bringing the reader to present day regarding his new life. The book gave me an unfinished incomplete feeling as it lacked this information.Also, I thought the book would include more information and inside into his emotions. It spent more time describing sensory facts of what he'd been theough and less on how he felt about it and even lesser on how he lives his life coming to terms with it.I have to admit I was expecting some internal dialogue regarding how he's reached a place of self forgiveness or tolerance for the craziness of this life and the situations we're put in.I suppose he did touch on this, in that he finally came to believe it wasnt his fault as the teachers kept repeating to him but I was just expecting more insight into his feelings regarding everything and less on just stated observations.Nonethless, it was a good book worth reading but because of the unfinished feeling I got from the ending I have to give it a solid 3.5

Chicago natives and co-authors of many books of photography Richard Cahan and Michael Williams have dug deeply into photographic archives to create their new book, "Classic Chicago: Timeless Photographs of a Changing City" (2017). The work includes over 225 photos taken from about 1905 to 2016. Some of the photographs have become symbolic of Chicago. For example Jonas Doyydenas 1969 picture of a young ironworker on the top of the John Hancock Center looking down on the city far below (p.161) has captured the drive of the city and inspired the authors to find other photos capturing Chicago's character. Other photos showing something of the life of the city are seen for the first time in this book. Similarly, many of the photographers in this book have become well-known, (There is a photograph taken by a young Stanley Kubrick) while other are obscure, and, for some photos, the photographer is unknown. Each photo is labeled by date, place, and photographer together with the authors' commentary. The authors frequently refer to other photography books on specific subjects covered in this volume, including the blues clubs, the transit system, and skid row. I was often tempted to want to look further. The reproductions are clear and are on glossy photographic paper.Although I never lived in Chicago I have spent time in the city over the years and have a fascination for American urban life. Many of the photos reminded me of places I have seen and walked during my visits to the city and of my reading in authors such as Saul Bellow, Nelson Algren, James T. Farrell, and others. I loved this book's pictures of historic Chicago with its street cars, large railroad terminals, bustling streets, diverse neighborhoods, and blues nightlife. The photos capture much of the promise and vibrancy of American life together with its problems and its frequent difficulties and sense of loneliness.The book consists of the authors' introduction followed by ten chapters of photographs. The early chapters give a broad overview of Chicago. The opening chapter, "The Indestructible Masterpiece" shows the crowds and buildings and endless bustle of the Loop over time. The second chapter, "The Great Traveler", shows railroads, cars, street cars, and the people who ride them, with their different faces, goals, and characters. "The Way Home" visits neighborhoods and children, including the neighborhoods of African Americans and the urban poor. The fourth chapter "Mrs.Sartopolis' day off" takes the reader on a quick tour of Chicago nightlife, with brightly lit thoroughfares, dance clubs, and the Chicago Blues. The blues, its clubs, performers, and recording studios, have received many volumes on their own. "On a Day Like This" takes another, closer look at downtown Chicago and at visitors to the city, including Doyydennas' photo of the brave ironworker mentioned earlier.The chapters in the latter half of the book have narrower themes. Chapter 6 offers a tour of Chicago's lakefront and of the vital role Lake Michigan plays in the city's life. Chapter 7, "Ten-Cent Wedding Rings" offers an all-too-brief look at the storied outdoor market of Maxwell Street which closed in 1994 after more than a century. Chapter 8, "Notes for a Tragedy" looks briefly at Chicago's notorious Skid Row. I had earlier literary familiarity with Skid Row from reading Nelson Algren's novel, "The Man With the Golden Arm." Chapter 9, "Fantastic Lollypops" offers photographs by experimental and avant-garde photographers, while the book's final chapter "Night Diary" could also be titled "Chicago Noir" as it shows the great, mysterious city in shadows and at night. Not your grandmother's craft book but she'll love it, too! Like many others, my intterest in the art of protest has intensified in the last couple of years so I was keenly interested in the ideas in Guerrilla Kindness. The great thing is that this book far surpassed my expectatons and has many forms of craftivism that are completely new to me and is grounded in history and scholarship along with the highest degree of creativity. I showed my girlfriend this book and they went crazy for it, too. I think this might be the COOLEST book on the subject and I encourage everyone to get this book and try the ideas in it. We have to make the world a better place and Guerrilla Kindness will help make that positive difference.

This thoughtful inspiring intersectional craftivist primer had terrific projects that range from beginner to more advanced. No matter your medium of choice, Sayraphim opens up the possibilities. Projects include seeing, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting, knitting and crochet. Highly recommend this for both beginners and the more advanced crafter.

I bought this book purely, because I admire Sayraphim as an artist, activist, and human being. I was rewarded greatly!Sayraphim's activism is broad and approachable. The book is a joy to flip through on days where you feel confident, but also days when you are feeling tired or low. My favourite parts of the book (other than food related parts, YUM) are about recycling and repairing. Sayraphim's instructions are joyous and flexible.I am also happy with the thickness of the cover, as it easy easy to flop open, and have it stay on the page you're looking at, while you follow whatever instructions are written there. Cookbooks should be like this!This book will get plenty of use from me and my friends, way in to the future!

For those of us who like to think outside the box, Sayraphim Lothian's craft book is perfect. Craftivism is exactly what it sounds like, Crafting combined with Activism, and Ms. Lothian gives many examples from of many different types of craft projects to be made, from a modified version of the Guerrilla Kindness Cupcakes that can be left in a public place as a gift for a stranger to her knitted protest dolls based on famous women. There's instructions for each project along with a detailed, usually historical, explanation of why she chose to illustrate the project in a particular way. For example, when she explains how to make and set up Yarnbombs, the accompanying photo is a knitted wrap around a pipe with "#MeToo as the message; she then explains how to create the piece as well as the phrase's origin long before it became a viral hashtag.One of the other things I love about this book is that she encourages creativity *outside* of the instructions she gives you. Want to use upcycled materials? Great! And if you can't find exactly what you need, switch it up however you want; go to thrift stores or garage sales or use second hand fabric from a friend! You want to put your own twist on a project, go right ahead! You don't want your protest cookies to have the same message? Of COURSE put your own message on them! She gives her photos and instructions as examples and inspiration to use to create your own craftivism projects; whether they follow the instructions exactly or not.I love the philosophy behind this book, not simply that you can make the world better by creatively crafting, but also that doing good can be fun!

Bought this map for a recent trip to Italy- also bought the map for Florence. It rained our first day in Rome so I was instantly pleased with myself for being so smart and buying a laminated map. Regrettably, the lamination did not hold up even in a light drizzle, and on day 1 of the trip, I had a map already falling apart.Secondly, the map splits ancient Rome to the South from the main central region. You have to continually flip the map over which is frustrating. Also, the map is just plain wrong in a few areas- showing "green parks" where there are none, and not showing some of the smaller roads and alleyways. Of course, your free tourist maps aren't much better in this regard, and the only reason this ranks a second star is because it was handy as a supplement (for compare and contrast purposes) to the free map from my hotel. Between the two, I could get anywhere.Finally, the map is large enough that you cannot stuff it in a pocket and have it be invisible. You will have to carry it either in a purse or day-pack, or be OK with it sticking out of your pocket. Because I prefer to not look too touristy (not be a target), I personally prefer to not carry a day-pack, and like quick access from a pocket. For that reason this map annoyed me because everyone could see a map sticking out of my pocket, immediately identifying me as a tourist.If these things are things that seem important to you, you may want to just grab a new free map from your hotel front desk each morning. Ask the person at the desk to circle your points of interest for the day and you'll save yourself some time, money, and frustration.

Yup! I'm actually leaving a review for a cheap plastic map. My wife and I recently spent a week in Rome on our honeymoon. This map is easily the best purchase I have made from Amazon. The map does exactly what it says it does. It is light, keeps its shape and is small enough that you don't end up standing on a street corner with a huge unfolded piece of paper struggling with wind or trying to fold it again. It also fit nicely in my wife's thin purse/clutch thing. It included all the areas of Rome you will likely need and helpfully has a blown up section of the downtown area (Trevi, Pantheon, etc). Streets are easily marked and while the map can't possibly show all names for all locations of interest in Rome, it does categorize by color. Rome is an incredibly walkable city and this map helped tremendously as we explored as many nooks and crannies as we could.

This is a tough map, folds well and has the central part of Rome well covered with index. Fits into jacket pocket. The print size is as one would expect for clarity, with a larger section for the very center. I will use it for walks, and it does have some buildings illustrated which help in place recognition; that is a very positive feature. There is an index also, looks promising, will be trying out shortly, and expect to put aside the flimsy guide maps which fall apart, going STRONG this year.

The good- The map folds easy, is laminated to protect it from harm. The streets are easy to read. I am glad I had it overallThe not as good-considering the vast number of free maps available from the ; hotels, money exchangers,and any other place you look if you are on a budget then this is a waste of money. The street names don't a match 100%, but this is an Italian issue with how they name things as much as the map. The map is really only the city center, and could saved a lot of hassle if it was just an inch bigger.The Bad- "Rome Museum"- That sounded really cool and we spent 1.5 hours looking for it. It is on the map, clear as day and it DOES NOT EXISTS. We talked to locals, and even a couple tour group leaders that were with other people and they all said they never head of it. We when in and out of every building in a 3 block radius. What a huge waste of time. It's not like it recently closed, it NEVER existed, and there isn't even one by that name anywhere and there are not ANY museums in that area. We bumped into the "Bocca della Verità " while looking for the fake Rome Museum, so at least that was good.In summary, the free maps will be just as good or better, but make sure you have a couple maps with you because of weird street names or different scales on the maps may help you navigate. If you knew for sure it was going to rain or you would be getting wet, then this would be a great map.

I love Streetwise maps, and when I had the opportunity to journey to Rome this year, I added this map to my growing collection of Streetwise city maps. The streets and landmarks are clearly marked-- albeit in tiny print, which is a standard for Streetwise maps. (If you need glasses to read a restaurant menu, you'll definitely need them for this map!) The laminated finish of the map makes it easier to use in wet weather, and the folded size is convenient for a purse or coat pocket. (It'll be too tall to fit all the way into a trouser pocket.) I try to travel with a dry-erase marker to note the day's plans-- with the shiny finish of the map, these can then be wiped away for the next day's route! I know folks have concerns about the small print on the Streetwise map(s), but for me, it's a worthwhile trade for a small map-- no need to unfold (and re-fold) a giant paper map.I started using Streetwise maps in 1996 with New York City, and my collection now includes cities across the U.S. and Europe-- they're my favorites for a reason!

I bought this map because it looked really good in pictures and seemed like it would take me to where I needed to go in Rome. When I received it I was happy with the quality. It was well laminated and seemed like it could last the trip.The problems started when we finally arrived and started using it. Some of the buildings on the map face the wrong direction, so we kept getting lost and going the wrong way. Now, I'm not exactly the best eagle scout out there, but I can usually find my way. I picked up a local paper map and managed much better. They had detail down to the various statues in each piazza that were visual cues as to where you were.Overall I was disappointed with this map. A free paper map from the hotel was better.

What a better round the world guided tour than reading Tim Marshall's "A Flag Worth Dying For". Colorful and rich in detail, Marshall gives us brief (and occasionally not so brief) histories of how flags came into being for many nations.Vexillology, or the study of flags, begins with our own Stars and Stripes. While, as an American, this chapter I know best, there were still facts presented that added to my knowledge. A particular treat in the first couple of chapters is the author's sense of humor in his narration. As he moves through Europe through the Middle East and to Asia, Marshall's humor lessens as the culture of war becomes more dramatic in assessing the development of flags in these areas. Geographically, we go south of the equator to visit Africa and South America. What strikes me most are the similarities of flags in certain regions...i.e. Scandanavia and Central America. Finally, Marshall ends up with a chapter called, "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" which features the Jolly Roger, the Olympics and the Rainbow Flag.Nicely ordered in accompaniment to the story are all the flags that the author discusses. It's a nice reference point to an unusual but important book. I highly recommend it.

Shipped it back - we actually found inaccurate information.

A decent entry into a very sparse collection of books about flags. However, the effort seemed rushed and often times faulty or too little information was given.As an introduction to the study of flags it leaves too much unexplained or undefined for too long. As a serious book for those more 'in the know' about flags and vexillology (the study of flags) it doesn't have quite enough new to add. When you add to that the generally casual tone and voice of the author, its hard to know who this book is for.Overall, however, it is nice to have a new book to add to the library of any serious fan of flags, but if you are well versed in world flag lore and categorization, this may not have anything to say to you.

Simple but very clear explanations about the real symbolic meaning of the World's most famous flags. Would recommend this book for any IR or PolSci student.

Got this book for a gift. He loves it.

I'm not a scientist, or a member of academia, but I did enjoy Jurassic Park. Dr. Shapiro has produced an accurate picture of where we are, and what we can expect to see in the near future regarding de-extinction. (Some of her predictions were announced by George Church's group at Harvard just last week!) She presents some terribly complicated information, concepts, and challenges in a way that most people can understand. This is not a dry textbook. This is also not a headline-grabbing, breathless prediction of herds of mammoths running amok in Siberia, or skies darkened by thousands of passenger pigeons. It's an honest look at a fascinating subject.What I found most interesting was Shapiro's thoughtful examination of the ethics of all this. Once we decide we could do this, should we? Should we devote literally piles of money to recreate creatures that may have no place to live? Would this time and money be better spent looking into why some creatures went extinct, while others thrived in the same environment?If you want to learn about de-extinction, buy this book. If you want a read that will entertain you and force you to think, buy this book.And keep your eye on Dr. Shapiro, I guarantee you'll be hearing more from her!

This book will be fascinating for anybody into science and evolution. It is very informative; It provided me with interesting new facts but also gave great explanations of concepts I already knew such as PCR.The book has changed the way I see extinction. So far I have though that we humans are responsible for the extinction of the majority of species. After reading this book I take a biological approach to this issue. Humans are a species which evolution involves the destruction of other species. If we look at this as scientists, humans are merely surviving. Just as any animal, we seek to expand our territories. Sure we are smarter and should know better and protect the lesser species, but our biological nature moves us towards selfishness instead of thinking about animals and plants or the environment. Regardless, if we cause a massive extinction, other species will appear and one day even we will go extinct. This book made me think so much about evolution and how de extinction is incredibly challenging and almost unachievable.I took out a star because bit was too repetitive at times and a lot of chapter 4 felt like very unnecessary info. There are few mistakes that make it look less professional but nothing too significant.

The idea that we could resurrect an extinct species using ancient DNA–popularly called “de-extinction”–captured the popular imagination. As techniques for sequencing DNA improved, real-life scientists started to take this idea seriously.But after reading scientist Beth Shapiro’s excellent book on the topic, I now understand that de-extinction isn’t what most people think.In How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction, Shapiro walks through the steps to de-extinction, in chapters such as “Select a species” and “Reconstruct the genome.” Before reading this book, I thought I basically understood the process: find some ancient DNA; sequence it; put it in some kind of egg; implant in a host mother; birth a baby.It’s so much more complicated than that.Despite the enthusiasm that some people have for bringing back charismatic megafauna like the wooly mammoth (a Russian entrepreneur is already preparing Pleistocene Park, a Siberian habitat where the modern world’s first mammoths can live), this book explains that in one sense, it cannot be done. DNA doesn’t last very long. Even with mammoth specimens well-preserved in ice, and only thousands of years old, the DNA that remains is fragmentary at best. And this is just the first of multiple technical obstacles that seem insurmountable.So why is this brilliant young UC professor dedicated to the science of ancient DNA and de-extinction? Because while we cannot bring back the mammoth (or any other long-lost species), we can bring back, or rather, create, a mammoth-like creature using pieces of the original mammoth’s genome added to an existing relative–the elephant.Why bother, then? Shapiro argues that de-extinction efforts should focus on restoring ecosystems, not individual species. The wooly mammoth, for example, played a crucial role in helping the tundra flourish. Research suggests that the trampling and grazing activity of large herbivores (like mammoths) can convert barren tundra into arctic grassland. Even if we can’t bring back the mammoth, we perhaps can create a cold-tolerant Asian elephant that lives in the tundra and replaces the role in the ecosystem lost when the last mammoth died.This was one of several important messages in this book that kept me thinking for some time after reading. Another takeaway that changed my way of seeing things was Shapiro’s discussion of how very hard it is to take a species from captivity and return it to a wild habitat. The idea that as long as we keep a few animals alive in zoos we will always have the option in the future to restore them to nature is false in most cases.How to Clone a Mammoth is thorough, thought-provoking, interesting, and written for lay people (though a keen interest in biology helps). It explores the science and the ethics of de-extinction, discusses the media’s role in this topic, and describes the author’s adventures in wild places hunting for frozen mammoth bones. Should we invest in de-extinction and try to “bring back” lost species? After reading this book, you’ll be equipped to argue one way or the other.

The clarity of explanation, thoughtfulness and understanding of this new and developing technology is one of the things that stands out. I'm certainly not a scientist or technician so when I understand, I feel that the author has leaped a chasm. This book talks about the how, why, and many arguments around this type of GMO in a fair and complete manner. We should at the very least be open to exploring these many new ideas. I personally wonder if some day we ourselves will need to be de-extincted and I wonder who and what the arguments will be like.

It is rare that so good a scientist is so good a writer. Shapiro uses her stance of having strong opinions as a gentle form of pedagogy for the lay reader, so that quite arcane details of genomic technology come across clearly and nuances of conservation ethics are laid out in a readable map of forking paths. Best of all for enhancing direct understanding of de-extinction, she writes not as an outsider or journalist but as one of the scientists in the thick of the new field inventing itself.(Bear in mind I’m also in the thick of this effort, not as a scientist but as the co-founder of Revive & Restore with my wife Ryan Phelan. We both appear in the book because our organization is helping coordinate and fund the various scientists working on de-extinction.)
