Review

“Personal, beguiling and quite moving as he talks about coming out and getting married… The story is told with brisk engagement ― it is difficult not to like him…When Obama wrote his memoir, the idea that the nation would soon put an African-American in the White House seemed beyond the realm of the possible. After reading this memoir written 25 years later, the notion that Buttigieg might be the nation’s first openly gay president doesn’t feel quite as far-fetched.” - Adam Nagourney, New York Times“The young mayor of South Bend, Indiana, now in his second term, explains what mayors do and offers ideas for the country as a whole. . . . Buttigieg's memoir/policy manual has all the signs of a book meant to position a candidate nationally, and his easy movement among and membership in many constituencies (gay, military veteran, liberal, first-generation American, etc.) suggests an interesting political future. For the moment, a valuable rejoinder to like-minded books by Daniel Kemmis, Mitch Landrieu, and other progressive city-scale CEOs.” - Kirkus Reviews“Readers will find telling insights into the events that shaped Buttigieg's biggest decisions and share a typical day in the mayor's office; relive Buttigieg's tour of duty in Afghanistan (while he was still acting mayor); and understand his angst over being a young, gay public figure trying to get a date (spoiler alert: there's a happy ending!). First and foremost a great, engaging read, this is also an inspiring story of a millennial making a difference.” - Kathleen McBroom, Booklist [starred review]“[Buttigieg] has an extraordinary story and great insights into the politics of our country.” - David Axelrod“Combining candor and compassion with a brilliant understanding of how government can be more effective, Shortest Way Home demonstrates that Pete Buttigieg is not only a key political figure in his generation, but also an appealing and even funny writer. Far from a conventional politician's book, his work is an important entry in the American political tradition for the twenty-first century.” - Walter Isaacson“Pete Buttigieg has given more to his community and country before his 40th birthday than most of us do over the course of our lives. At every crossroads, he has turned towards service and leveraged his energy and intellect to help his neighbors and fellow citizens. In this book, you will not only learn about what brings Pete home, but what drives him towards his vision of a better, kinder nation.” - Joe Kennedy III“In this uplifting coming-of-age memoir from the American heartland, Pete Buttigieg, successful mayor of revitalized South Bend, Indiana, writes that the shortest distance between opportunity and success, ‘like good literature, takes personal lived experience as its starting point’―a promising axiom for a prospective national figure.” - David Levering Lewis

Just finished "Shortest Way Home," and I am now thinking Pete Buttigieg could indeed be our next President.I immediately recognized South Bend, Indiana, when I arrived from Pittsburgh. Both cities have suffered from the loss of American manufacturing (Pittsburgh steel, and South Bend Studebaker automobiles). I had to move from Pittsburgh to South Bend about 6 years ago, and I have witnessed the renaissance here, inspired and helmed by this young, dynamic guy."Mayor Pete" came to the office of mayor with impressive credentials and a drive to reshape his hometown into a model of success for the twenty-first century. This book is the story of small city politics, and of the nuts and bolts of turning high expectations and soaring ideas into concrete success.Along with the story of leading South Bend, much attention will no doubt be paid to the fact that Mayor Pete, along with being a veteran, is a married gay man. But that story, couched as it is amid the tale of drive, success, dedication, patriotism, optimism and vision, becomes not such a big deal. He benefits from the progress we have made in accepting our lgbtq fellow citizens, but his candor is refreshing and inspiring. This book reveals a man of intellectual agility, optimism, bravery, and a cohesive vision that is refreshing and clearly conveyed. Whatever his future holds in politics, one should not dismiss this guy. My bet is that he will inspire surprising support from a diverse group of converts. It's rather fitting that Joe Kennedy III is a fan.

Fascinating look at South Bend and "Mayor Pete." His heart and intelligence shine throughout the chapters. I didn't want to put it down.

PEOPLE LISTEN UP, HE'S THE REAL DEAL!! I rarely read political books since I'm a scientist, but this is such a fantastic book and I would recommend it to everyone who's looking for hope in American politics! Pete has good ideas and a clear vision for the future, his experiences are amazing, has a stellar resume, but is such a down-to-earth person and so likeable. Haven't felt so hopeful in such a long time! You go Pete! (Also, I'm a student at Oxford. So glad we're from the same school.)

I grew up in South Bend, and recently moved away. This book has been a trip down memory lane. The idea presented are applicable to any midwestern city, including where I live today in Wisconsin. Mayor Pete’s powerful anecdotes will make any Midwesterner smile.

This book reads like an intimate journal and paints a picture of South Bend, growing up in a “rust belt” city, being a member of the LGBT community in the Midwest, running for office, and taking on leadership roles in order to give back to communities you love. Pete’s voice is certainly wise beyond his years and this personal memoir sheds light onto why that is. A great read.

I bought this book as a way of learning about one of the less well-known Democratic contenders for POTUS in 2020, expecting a bullet-list of political goals and Buttigieg’s personal take on why, at his young age, he deserves to be president. What I found instead was a fascinating story of how a bright, clever young man put his decaying Midwestern hometown of South Bend, Indiana, on the road to recovery. Against the backdrop of a well-written story of how Buttigieg grew a city is an even more poignant story of how he grew himself, what that self entails, and details of how that self came to be. The book is not political, though, by its conclusion the author’s politics are clear. It is not a book of promises, but rather a sharing of achievements and the thinking that produced them, which inevitably reveals what Buttigieg would bring to the presidency. Finally, it is not a book of lofty ideals, but a sharing of the recognition that ideals that are worth pursuing require hard work and a willingness to labor intimately and constructively with those around you, even when those around you don’t agree with you. He is bright, insightful, and writes beautifully, skillfully turning the potentially boring in-house details of small town bureaucracy into a fascinating mosaic of growth and hope and never giving up. I feel that my purpose in buying this book was fulfilled: I know Buttigieg well enough to make in informed decision about him in 2020. More importantly, the book allowed me to get to know him as a person, a perspective too often absent in assessing fit for political office. For anyone interested in the upcoming presidential election, it is a must-read.

I wanted to like this book, to hold out hope it portrayed the promise of something more. The title is great, but it reads like disjointed autobiography that's focus is over descriptive to the point of distraction. Definitely reads as a rushed work of jumbled chapters that were cobbled together and was re-edited to death with the constant suggestion to add more vivid description. Obviously it was pulled together for a specific launch to propel the 2020 race. I wish every chapter read more like the one on his husband, you can tell there is genuineness of heart that I didn't feel in the rest of the book. Very confusing.

I'm from Indiana. I had heard of Pete Buttigieg before he announced that he was considering running in the 2020 presidential election. He's not simply a long shot. He has become a David in a field full of Goliaths. With that said, he clearly has the background that can appeal to people from nearly everywhere in the United States. His degrees from Harvard and Oxford are impressive. He was a Rhodes scholar and was deployed to Afghanistan. Not only that, if you listen to the Axe Files podcast with David Axelrod, you can hear Pete's enthusiasm and his understanding of what the Midwest looks like after the Great Recession. He talks about going to nearly every county in Indiana to shake hands and talk to people. Pete is young enough to have the energy to campaign all over the country.I'd recommend reading the sample of this book, if nothing else. You can get a glimpse of South Bend and the way that it has changed over the years.

Review

"An atmospheric, multilayered, sex-positive romance from the talented Bennett." -- Kirkus, Starred ReviewBirdie Lindberg, a lover of detective novels, teams up with her one-time hookup Daniel Aoki to solve a mystery at the historic Seattle hotel where they work. After years of being home-schooled by her strict, recently deceased grandmother, orphaned 18-year-old Birdie's circle of friends is limited to three adults: her widowed grandpa, Hugo (with whom she lives on Bainbridge Island); her free-spirited-artist honorary aunt, Mona Rivera; and Ms. Patty, co-owner of her favorite refuge in the city, the Moonlight Diner. So when Birdie, who's white and has undiagnosed narcolepsy, starts a night shift at a historic hotel, she's gobsmacked to bump into co-worker Daniel, a handsome half-Japanese/half-white boy with whom she shared a romantic-turned-awkward night before fleeing the scene. Remembering Birdie's love of mysteries, Daniel—who's 19 and a magic aficionado—suggests they investigate whether a regular guest is actually Raymond Darke, the pen name of a reclusive bestselling local mystery author. Bennett (Starry Eyes, 2018, etc.) excels at nuanced characterization, portraying deeply felt first love, and offering readers well-researched diversity (Mona is Puerto Rican, Daniel's deaf in one ear and has grandparents who survived the Japanese-American internment). The mystery theme is compelling (each chapter opens with a quote from a famous sleuth), but it's the way Birdie and Daniel navigate an emotional and physical relationship—despite their sensitively handled issues—that's truly memorable. An atmospheric, multilayered, sex-positive romance from the talented Bennett. (Fiction. 14-18) (Kirkus Reviews *STARRED* February 15, 2019)

#22,035 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I didn't know anything about this sort of topic--privilege, power, the interaction of different groups--before taking my first grad school course. I think the information in here is important and eye opening. When you first read this book, it makes it sound like "because you are of , will happen to you". That's what I was getting from it when I first read it, and I had a hard time absorbing the contents at the beginning because I was ticked at being told that because I'm biracial, "thing y" WILL happen to me--as though it's inevitable, when I haven't had some of the experiences mentioned in the book. In addition, if I was a caucasian male, I would definitely feel like I was being beat up on, and so it would be hard for those who fall into that social group not to push back either. After speaking with a friend about the contents and attending a few class sessions, I started to understand a bit more about what this book is trying to get across. The concepts discussed here are systemic issues, not individual. That is, the author isn't talking about sexism or racism or ableism in a way that suggests that individual people are being overtly sexist, or racist, or ableist. Instead, there are systems in place--laws, generally accepted practices--that perpetuate customs that have the effect of being sexist or what have you. They disproportionately affect marginalized factions of society. What might majority culture view with disdain, and might it be because it's associated with a minority culture? As an example, many people react with vitriol when the discussion of illegal immigration comes up. Is this because people assume all undocumented residents are from Mexico or South America, and Mexicans are "bad"? There are Canadians, Australians, Polish, Japanese, etc. who are undocumented. If the face of the undocumented population was a Caucasian businessman from calgary, would the tone of the national conversation be the same? It might be, but it's worth considering whether there might be a change in climate.A single class in this subject matter is just an introduction, but it has opened my eyes to the unearned advantages that I have. Do I think that everything that happens, every comment that's made, every position someone has is sexist or racist? No. Do I still have difficulties with this kind of subject matter? Absolutely. But I do consider people's background or the experiences they may have had more often. I don't think that there's such a thing as common sense anymore, because that's assuming the same level of background and experiences for everyone. I do think that this subject matter is important for everyone to be exposed to, as it will help folks understand one another and stop making assumptions and allow us to embrace the diversity around us. I think it's beautiful that there are so many different types of people out there, and I think this could encourage others to be more accepting and those of us who are different to embrace that difference instead of be ashamed or embarrassed about them.

This book is excellent. Allan Johnson's writing is smooth and easy to digest, rather than being heavy academic material. This is a book I would recommend for anyone who is interested in learning about privilege without having to go through the bumps and bruises that happen when you're learning purely through interaction. There's no shaming or guilt, you're not asked to apologize, etc. Those are the biggest hurdles to get over when learning about these concepts. It's definitely a book that is higher priced, but that's probably due to its use in academia. Buy it used! I think this would be a wonderful took for the average person if it were a bit more affordable. Definitely something I will keep on my book shelf for easy access.

I found this book to balance well the heaviness of the subject matter with the need to refrain from making the reader feel depressed and hopeless after reading it. It treats the subject matter gently and without feeling the need to make it seem irreversible or like it is trying to organize a mob. I found the information to be relevant, well-cited, and divulged in a way that both a student of the field as well as the casual reader can find engaging.

EVERY white person needs to read this!

I am now reading this book for the second time since my purchase. It is wonderfully inspiring when you allow yourself to get lost in your own experiences throughout the read. It is lightweight and the cover is nice and thick which is great for a backpack where things tend to get smushed!

Well written and informative.

This is a refreshing if not sometimes overwhelming work on the power differences and their etiology. I would recommend this book to anyone considering a career in the social services.

excellent book. I'm having students in my dialogue, power, and diversity class read it. It's eye-opening for them.

Winding Machines: Mechanics and Measurement

Review

This extraordinary book does three things at the same time. First, it gives simple recipes for fixing problems and explains them with exceptional clarity and insight. Second, it gives the deep technical background as to why these recipes work. Third, through the use of case studies we can all recognise it shows how the theory and practice come together and make the recipes work. What sorts of problems does it help you solve? Telescoping, starring, tin-canning, bursts, crepe wrinkles, core collapse, high-speed vibrations, gauge bands. These are just some of the defects they discuss. A book written by a professor and a consultant could be a mixture of impenetrable academic prose and frothy consultant speak. But Good and Roisum make sure that you get the best of both worlds insightful science coupled with hard-nosed reality from the shop floor. The book is a delight to read There s a bonus. The book includes a CD with a powerful winding modeller. This means that you can put in your own winding parameters and see what s going on inside your own rolls taking into account taper, nip pressure, air entrainment and thermal/hygroscopic effects. In three words: buy this book! --Professor Steven Abbott, Research & Technical Director, MacDermid AutotypeThis book is a useful purchase for any engineer or technologist concerned with winding thin materials, particularly paper, film and similar products. It brings together the expertise of two world-leading experts in the field. Dr David Roisum is an inspiring teacher of winding principles and practice, and his seminars and courses are famous around the globe. I can almost imagine myself sitting in his class as I read the book! There are useful solutions to most winding problems, and the reasons why things are done are carefully explained. The sections of the book on machines and measurement especially show David s sympathy for the employees faced with turning out good rolls, of ever-changing products, on machines that may not be quite up to the job. His folksy approach and everyday analogies make this a very appealing book; although some of the technical and not-so-technical terms may mean little to those outside North America! Dr Keith Good has led the winding research at Oklahoma State University s Web Handling Research Centre for 20 years. During this time he has published many research papers, and these form the core of the section on modelling. Building on the basic calculation of stresses within a roll after winding, he has proposed and experimentally confirmed the additional effects of a contact roller, air entrainment, thermal and viscoelastic effects. He is acknowledged as the top academic expert on winding world-wide. As well as the published academic studies, he is familiar with the development work and production issues in many of the companies that sponsor the Centre: these include most of the major US firms who produce and process web materials. The key idea in the book is that the winding conditions and material properties determine the stresses within the roll during and after winding, and these determine the roll properties and whether it will exhibit one or more of a number of defects. Quality problems can often be solved by relatively simple changes to the winding conditions or equipment: there are suggestions in the book for overcoming most defects. However, the modelling of roll stresses can reduce the time taken to reach a solution; and it enables the effects of larger reels, higher speeds and new materials to be considered with a degree of certainty. This significantly reduces the risk of building equipment or running a new product on production scale. To appreciate the theory fully, graduate-level engineering mathematics is needed. However, there are sufficient explanations and figures for this section to be comprehensible and valuable for readers without that background. To perform the modelling, the book comes with WindARoll software written using Microsoft Excel® as a platform. This calculates and plots graphs of roll stresses, wound-on tension (after passing through the contact nip), torque capacity and limiting speeds for significant air entrainment and telescoping. A useful library of web material properties can be called up. Each input has a clear pop-up help comment of what is required and its significance. The book is unique in the way it applies recent academic research to solving practical winding problems. It represents a significant advance on Roisum s earlier book, The Mechanics of Winding , published in 1994. It will continue to be useful as rolls of basic papers and films are produced at higher speed and larger sizes, and novel materials such as flexible electronics, medical products and laminates are found in roll form at some stage during their manufacture. --Dilwyn P Jones, Consultant, Emral Ltd, UK

Good book to learn winding. As a graduate engineering student, I can say this book teaches you from the bottom to top about the winding knowledge including material, equipment and etc. Highly recommended

The cost indicated this might be a bit more detailed than it is. It does cover most of the subjects regarding winding but some subjects contain little detail. I my opinion a good overview of winding but not really worth the high price tag. The software supplied on disk is little more than a calculating spreadsheet and not much real use.

My two cent'sThis book is a must have, if you are working in the winding industry and want to go deeper inside the winding process.Although it is mainly focus on the paper side of winding and less on the foiland a lot of parts in this book are common sense things I still highly value this book,as it gives you a good inside at the whole winding process.Best Regards,

Excellent handbook for film manufacturers, quality managers and R&D guys dealing with films.Even if costly it is worthly spent money.

Fat of the Land: Garbage of New York -- The Last Two Hundred Years, by Benjamin Miller

From Publishers Weekly

Of all of New York's unnatural resources, garbage is perhaps the most lucrative and, historically, the most contested. This deeply researched, eclectic history of how New York has handled its increasingly mountainous accumulations of trash is social and political history at its best. As Miller's comprehensive view makes clear, the problem of urban garbage disposal has many tentacles. While social philosopher Jeremy Bentham viewed it as a moral problem, yellow fever and cholera outbreaks in the city later revealed that it was also a health problem. When new technology allowed grease to be easily extracted from refuse, however, it became an economic boon; as the metropolis began to expand, garbage also became a basic landfill material, producing millions for developers and city politicians. Miller, the former director of policy for the New York City Department of Sanitation, is equally at ease with the intricacies of Brooklyn ward politics, Frederick Law Olmsted's theories of urban planning and Edison's plan for convenient electricity, and manages to work many fascinating details into his larger economic and political framework. His story grows pointedly relevant when he details the 1938 efforts of municipal administrator Robert Moses to designate the Fresh Kills marshland as a landfill area (in order to fulfill his secret plan to build a bridge to New Jersey from Staten Island)Da move that infuriated environmentalists and continues to haunt the city's administrations. Miller has crafted a notably elegant treatment of this important though neglected topic. Agent, Malaga Baldi. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

In densely populated New York City, garbage is a contentious political issue that, like the odorous stuff itself, never goes away. Miller is the in-house policy wonk for the city's sanitation department, and he has produced a remarkably readable history of the city's refuse-disposal problem. The smelly subject emerges as a fulcrum for the more obvious elements of civic life, such as politics and corruption, land-use battles, and the construction of the city's transportation infrastructure, which inevitably features public-works autocrat Robert Moses charging through Miller's narrative. Miller preludes that with the nineteenth-century's version of the problem: getting rid of dead animals. For decades a plant on "Barren" (Coney) Island dealt with the offal, while incinerators of other garbage dumped ashes in Queens. Miller's chapters about Moses underscore the paradox of his unaccountability with his ability to deal with garbage, albeit by creating the notorious Fresh Kills Dump on Staten Island. Coursing through the contemporary politics of NYC's garbage problem, Miller's case study is a must for the urban-studies shelf. Gilbert TaylorCopyright © American Library Association. The colorful and fetid history of waste makes for an enervating read. Miller has done exhaustive and meticulous research to share with us the forgotten tale of where the trash went and the distressing facts about where it goes today. There are many new, never-before revealed facts Miller has unearthed from the landfill of time-- he introduces us to an astounding and entertaining parade of bold scoundrels, do-gooder public health pioneers, social theorists, corrupt politicans, self-righteous environmentalists and a few good, clear thinkers tossed in for good measure. Miller himself is certainly one of them. He digs deep and leads us with a steady hand and a cool, observing eye to the places where were planted the seeds of public policy that have brought us to the ruin we face today. This cautionary tale applies not only to New York, though New York, as in many things, stands as the example, good and bad, of how disposal works.Don't be put off by the subject or think this is an academic book. Miller is a superb prose stylist and his ability to summon vividly the characters and tenor of past times is often wonderfully Dickensian. This sleeper is a ripping good read. Enjoy! I've heard the author is going to be on NPR's Fresh Air in December. No pun intended, I gather...

I've had this book on my office shelf since it was first published, and though I agree with some the criticisms of the other reviewers - such as inadequate coverage of contracts and more attention paid to personality than to the deeper structures of politics - it is one of the few books of New York history to which i return again and again. Trash - the third pollution - is a great way to approach urban history and Miller's work is wonderfully engaging and accurate.

This book contains a useful timeline, just a few pages long, chronicling the significant events contained in the rest of the book. Save time -- read that part instead. He has a few good points to make, but then it comes across as mostly padding. I had been hoping for more, on such a fascinating topic. (yawn) On second thought, it did help me get to sleep.

We are certainly indebted to Benjamin Miller for writing this highly informative and fascinating history of NY City's waste management. It reminded me of William Cronon's Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West. However, this book could have been better. I feel the book was hastily written and is too condensed. I wish Miller had written it in 3 or perhaps 5 volumes. So many people are mentioned in the book that I certainly would have benefitted if the book contained a section describing the dramatis personnae. Miller uses NY-specific terms, such as Tammany, without explaining them. The book should have had a better map, pinpointing more locations mentioned in the story. I very much appreciated the photos and other illustrations in the book.I hope that Miller will bring out a revised edition, bringing readers up to date on developments with NY's waste management over the past decade (since the book was first published), and adding detail to the contents of the first edition.I expect that this book will be of great interest to all New Yorkers, and to everybody interested in solid waste management.

This book is the story behind the people responsible for taking care of waste removal in New York City. The book begins with a chapter that traces the infamous woeful journey of the Mobro, the garbage barge that could not find a home. The main text of the book is divided into 4 sections: Engineering Reform (public health in Europe and America in the mid-1800s, early NYC contracts for gathering bones and organic matter in the mid-1800s), Expanding Opportunities (contracts for Central Park, elevated railways, the Brooklyn Ash incinerator), Public Work (roads and rails, bridges and tunnels, parks and parkways, ports and airports, all covering the 1930s to 1940s), and Landscape Sculpture (Rachel Carson, DDT, dioxins and incinerators, landfills, transfer stations, and NIMBYs). The book concludes with a chapter on the "Pew Yew Choo-Choo", a Mobro-like train that looked in vain for a place to unload. The book is amply illustrated with black and white photographs and drawings. At the end of the book are 90 pages of documentary notes, but presumably to strengthen the narrative of the text, they are not linked directly to the main text with endnote numbers. The subtitle of the book,"Garbage of the New York the last two hundred years", is a very inaccurate guide to the book's actual contents. The book isn't about garbage, but about the people who wanted the garbage contracts over the years, and the politics involved with getting the contracts. Actually, the book also doesn't focus particularly strongly on garbage contracts either, since quite a few pages or even chapters are devoted to the contracts for other infrastructure projects, like Central Park and public transit systems. Many of these other projects do have a loose connection with garbage, in the sense that some of them depended on garbage for fill (such as LaGuardia Airport), but others seem to be included only because they involved some of the same people who were also vying for the garbage contracts. In any case, the book can hardly claim to cover the last two hundred years, since the text begins in the 1840s.I picked up this book because I was interested in learning more about how one of the largest cities in the country has dealt with its garbage over the years. There was no description at all of early garbage disposal arrangements in NYC before the 1840s. I did learn how dead animals and bones were boiled for grease in the mid-1800s, and there was limited discussion of incinerators, as well as some information about landfills and shipping garbage out of town. But a few clues in the book lead to me to believe there was more to be said about garbage. For example, at one point, Miller mentions a NYC law that required all buildings with more than 12 residential units to have their incinerators. Does this mean that there was some sort of responsibility or expectation for garbage to be dealt with at the point of disposal? Was this a wide-spread practice? For how long? To write a comprehensive history of garbage in NYC, Miller might have put more focus on questions such as these, and a bit less on issues that are only marginally, if at all, related to garbage.

As a former New Yorker, I'm enjoying this engrossing tale of money and politicians, public health and urban real estate moguls, and behind the scenes views of the forces that shaped the growth of one of the world's most dynamic cities.Good read for those interested in history and politics, but also has enough nitty-gritty gossip and well-researched tales of corruption to be entertaining for the general reader.

The author Hearn has a great flair for language and immersing one in the moment, he does a great job of describing life in the french antilles, from carnival time, industry, cultural anecdotes, interesting historical tidbits and the impact of colonization on its populace.I wanted to like this book more but as a person of African descent it was a bit hard too. Not out of place in his time, Hearn employs alot of racist language to describe the people of majoritavely African descent. They are "less than comely" and the African is "vulgar" while he seems enthralled by th mixed race people of Martinique, he also seems to find a savagery in their beauty attributed to their African heritage.Otherwise, it was an exuberant, languid depiction of the Islands, You could almost pick up the cadence of Creole being spoken and felt as you yourself ought to be careful to spot the much feared "fer de lance" snake as you traversed Martinique's glowing hills with Mont Pelée fuming in the distance. If you enjoy Caribbean literature particularly that concerning the French Antilles i would recommend authors like Raphael Confiant, Maryse Conde , Gisele Pineau ,Jacques Roumain and others.

Lafacadio Hearn travelled to the French West Indies at the end of the 19th Century and while the book is of historical interest, very little of what he observes or writes about is of particular relevance today. His observations reveal the cultural assumptions and biases of his time period ... and very little about the French West Indies.

Certainly not the same quality or interest level as historical novel “Lydia Bailey” which I loved.

Interesting observations at that particular historical era. However some of the author's observations were too detailed and causes the reader to lose the thread of the narrative.

This is a great book, purchased at a great price, and delivered at breakneck speed!!! This review is only focused on the condition of the book, the price, and the speed of delivery because I have not read it yet.

A great writer and a fascinating man, better known for his books about Japan... This book is one long Caribbean moment preserved in amber.

I love everything I have read by Lafcadio Hearn. Living in New Orleans I started with his writings about my city. Because I read his writings about Japan I have visited there several times. I am now in Martinique (for the 5th time) re-reading Two Years in The French West Indies (I lost my first copy in Hurricane Katrina).

The Talented Miss Highsmith: The Secret Life and Serious Art of Patricia Highsmith, by Joan Schenkar

Review

“Schenkar has a wonderfully bold approach: not worrying about a linear chronology (although this is meticulously supplied in the appendices), but choosing instead to follow the emotional water course of Highsmith's life, allowing her subject to find her own level -- to be tidal, sullen, to flow without check, so that events in one decade naturally make an imaginative tributary into turbulence before and after. Schenkar's writing is witty, sharp and light-handed, a considerable achievement given the immense detail of this biography. Highsmith was a detail junkie. Schenkar's nonlinear organizing method was a brilliant idea to save herself -- and the reader -- from data overload. This is a biography of clarity and style. A model of its kind. ” ―Jeanette Winterson, The New York Times Book Review; cover review“This is no ordinary biography...[Ms. Schenkar] writes with great authority and perverse affection...'The Talented Miss Highsmith' breaks much ground in connecting Highsmith's diabolical tales with the real women who prompted her strongest passions ....In addition to its impressive sweep, this biography also values minutiae. An exacting inventory of the contents of Highsmith's office captures every mundane object, right down to the goat's bell and the Wite-Out pencil. Highsmith loved details like that. And Ms. Schenkar shows an uncannily keen grasp of Highsmith's spirit. ” ―Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Throughout nearly 700 pages of lustrous text, Schenkar's prose is as supple and shapely as Highsmith's was flat and functional. "The Talented Miss Highsmith" is both dazzling and definitive ... Its scope and scholarship are unassailable, and its vigor indefatigable. t's a volume as original as its contemptible, miserable, irresistible subject.” ―Daniel Mallory, Los Angeles Times“Ms. Schenkar provides a vivid, disturbing portrait of a writer whose work--thanks to some virtuosic movie-making--is known more as source material than as literary art in its own right... It is hard to imagine a more thoroughly fact-filled or energetic biography than "The Talented Miss Highsmith" or one more determined to examine the deepest recesses of its complicated subject.” ―Alexander Theroux, The Wall Street Journal“[A] biography that captures the writer in all her sullen, sinister, ambivalent glory. Grade: A” ―Entertainment Weekly“What most impresses me with Schenkar's approach is its boldness: she casts aside chronology to get at the themes of her heroine's character, and she conjures those themes by unabashedly connecting the events of Highsmith's life to her work. So we get marvellous formulations like this: 'Pat thought about love the way she thought about murder: as an emotional urgency between two people, one of whom dies in the act.' Much of Highsmith's work remains little known by the general reading public, and the details of her fascinating life obscure, Schenkar's book should serve as a corrective. We plan on delving into some Highsmith books we haven't read (I've just begun "The Price of Salt" and Jon is tackling Ripley), and we hope you'll approach this month's pick in a similar way--as an invitation to learning more about the work of, as Schenkar puts it, 'Her High Darkness, Patricia Highsmith: author of some of the twentieth century's most dangerous fictions.'” ―Macy Halford, The New Yorker Online Book Club: Book of the Month“Schenkar's fascinating biography portrays Highsmith as driven by obsessions, especially her love-hate relationship with her mother, and a yin-yang ambivalence that became a central main theme in her writings ... The catalyst for Schenkar's exhaustive, compelling work, which boasts copious end notes, maps, charts, diagrams, bibliography, and chronology, was the recent unearthing of 8,000 pages of Highsmith's secret journals. The result is an essential, scholarly, lesbian, and literary biography.” ―Booklist“A comprehensive, nuanced evaluation of Highsmith Country.” ―Kirkus Reviews“VERDICT: An imaginative, definitive Highsmith biography, great for literature students, Highsmith fans, and mystery readers.” ―Library Journal“Joan Schenkar is the first writer to grapple with Patricia Highsmith on every level of her being, from her bizarre personal life to her incredibly prolific writing life. It's hard to avoid superlatives when describing Schenkar's biography, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to go about it.” ―Deirdre Bair, winner of the National Book Award for Samuel Beckett: a Biography“This is an epic biography - vivid with Joan Schenkar's concern for her subject - the mercurial, gifted, fascinating mystery novelist Patricia Highsmith. Schenkar is an inexhaustible researcher and meticulous cultural historian, especially in the hidden pan-sexual world of literary New York of the 40s and 50s. She has a remarkable ability to evoke landscapes, relationships and, above all, a myriad of personal details from the fountain pen Highsmith used to the amount of alcohol she drank to the women she loved (and lost) all the while telling us how Highsmith concocted masterpieces like Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley. This is a big book, an awesome achievement. ” ―Patricia Bosworth, author of Diane Arbus: a Biography“Patricia Highsmith is a fascinating and bizarre figure, and a tremendous challenge for the biographer who has to account for her alcoholism, lesbianism, negativism, criminal tendencies, huge talent and much else. Joan Schenkar has accomplished this amazing feat with a really smart book. ” ―Diane Johnson, critic and novelist, author of Lulu in Marrakech“I was enthralled by The Talented Miss Highsmith. It's a brilliant biography, so finely judged in its critical appreciation of Pat's work, wonderfully informative about its sources and inspiration, and both enlightening and harrowing in its revelation of her tormented personality and darkly troubled yet (because of her exceptional talent) in some ways triumphant life. ” ―Francis Wyndham, critic, editor, winner of the Whitbread First Novel Award forThe Other Garden

One of the most obnoxious books I've ever read. Why on God's earth would anyone write not *just* a biography of someone they revile, but a massive biography at that!? The book is filled with snide asides that inject the author and her biases at every turn (on French waiters mistaking Highsmith for a man and Highsmith thinking it was because of her big feet and hands, JS cruelly wrote, what else could she think). Schenkar also keeps the book unorganized, off a timeline and therefore very unnatural, if you will. The odd organization serves JS's ugly themes more than it does PH's life. By avoiding a linear timeline, I feel JS missed a most crucial fact of PH's life: that the woman at the end was vastly transformed by a life of unaddressed and rampant alcoholism. There's no surprise that PH was a different person near the end of her life. Instead of focusing on the beautiful, brilliant, funny, randy, likable and charming woman she was (or could be) when she created her best works (Strangers on a Train, The Price of Salt [AKA Carol], The Talented Mr. Ripley), JS gets off on the ravaged PH: the anti-social, xenophobic, Semite-hating, snail-keeping woman, without giving due credit to classic alcohol damage (impulse control, sociability, etc). JS revels in the damage, wallows in her own hate and disgust. It's an appalling stance for a biographer. It would not be unlike assessing a former athlete after a devastating stroke -- sure, you can give horrifying descriptions of efforts to speak or tie shoes -- but would that be the essence of the athlete? While JS is an articulate woman and the book, such as it is, uses nice words and can at times be well-written, do NOT let this biased hate-fest be your only look at Highsmith or her life.

I love the cover photograph of Highsmith, and the title of this book is clever, but otherwise this is a terrible biography. The way the author jumps all over the place in time, sometimes going back and forth between a few decades within two paragraphs is very confusing and makes for an unpleasant reading experience. The reason I purchased this is because I am a huge fan of Highsmith's work and have read all of her novels at least twice. Some of her novels, like This Sweet Sickness, I have read over ten times. I have never done that with any other author. For some reason Joan Schenkar spends almost the entire length of this biography trashing Highsmith's work and writing style. From reading this you'd get the impression that only maybe one or two of her novels were worth reading. She also trashes Highsmith as a person by only focusing on the most negative traits of her personality. I'm sure we have all done bad things during our life or acted childish at some points, but I have a hard time imagining that Highsmith spent every moment of her life being drunken and miserable with a scowl on her face. That is just way too cartoonish for a real-life person. If she was really that unpleasant how could she have had so many friends and admirers over the years? It seems like half the information in here is based on the accounts of bitter ex-lovers, if you wanted that you may as well get it firsthand by reading Marijane Meaker's memoir about the time she spent with Highsmith.I am a fast reader, and not easily distracted, I am also an obsessive fan of Patricia Highsmith, it's normally a delight for me to read anything about her. This book has taken me about two years to finish reading. I've had to start it over twice, but I finally forced myself to get through it.I don't regret buying it, because there are some great photographs inside, and I love owning anything related to Patricia Highsmith, but this book works best as a decoration.Beautiful Shadow by Andrew Wilson is a much better biography of Highsmith that came out a few years before this one. He gives an unbiased and clear picture of her life. He is objective without feeling the need to trash her or her work. Ugh, seriously this book is terrible. If you bother to check my other reviews you can see that I am pretty easy to please when it comes to most things, I give all of Katy Perry's albums five stars. So for me to feel the need to give something one star is a big deal.

I thought the design of the book was interesting and detailed. Yes, some of the details were too lengthy and didn't add anything else to Pat's character or history. It seemed the author wanted to provide as much detail as possible for the reader. (Essentially, some readers may find no displeasure in it and others will skip ahead to another page.)The author did provide insight from the people who knew her through her life. It allowed the reader to see how she was on the inside and outside during various times in her life. It also allowed the reader to form their own opinion about her as well. The author tried very hard to present the facts of Patricia Highsmith and I don't feel it was the author contributing their own feelings into the subject. The author even provides multiple quotes from lovers, friends, family and acquaintances to reveal her true form and identity. Quite simply, she is a hard case to read upon and she is hard to understand and accept. She was not the easiest or friendliest person in life and for some this may be hard to accept by some readers who admired her work.A really good read!
