Spring, by Karl Ove Knausgaard

Review

"If you still haven’t tried Knausgaard or have been unsatisfied with his helplessly casual New York Times travel essays, try Spring. It’s poignant and beautiful…Even if you think you won’t like Knausgaard, try this one and you’ll get him and get why some of us have gone crazy for him." — Los Angeles Review of Books   “Spring features Knausgaard unbound, writing for the first time without a gimmick or the crutch of extravagant experimentation. . .  Spring refuses contrivance; it refuses to parry. Instead, over the course of one day, we watch Knausgaard care for the children and home, his wife mysteriously absent. He changes diapers, makes meatballs, desultorily enforces some discipline and does a harrowing amount of laundry. He sneaks off for a cigarette and writing time. And the book’s blunt, unforced telling brings the larger project’s meaning into sudden, brilliant focus…This series is the rejoinder to his father’s diary. Knausgaard has assembled this living encyclopedia for his daughter with a wild and desperate sort of love, as a way to forge her attachment to the world, to fasten her to it — to fight the family legacy of becoming unmoored and alienated. Fall in love with the world, he enjoins, stay sensitive to it, stay in it.” — The New York Times "Knausgaard’s assets are on full display, including his precise writing style and his unerring sense of detail. He is constantly attuned to his surroundings, noting the changing weather and the colors of flowers, which may account for why he is so successful at what he does: transforming quotidian life into drama. . . For anyone who is curious about this writer but has not felt the urge to invest in the full 3,500 pages of his autobiographical series, “My Struggle,” “Spring” makes for an excellent introduction. It is the shortest book he has ever written, but it is all muscle, a generous slice of a thoughtful, ruminative life.” — The Washington Post“This volume is a novella that more directly recalls his epic My Struggle series, driven by the same intensely analytical impulses… If we neglect simple things, how else are we neglectful? And how much harm are we unwittingly bringing upon others, especially those we love most? A fine stand-alone meditation on mortality and fatherhood.” — Kirkus, starred review “Knausgaard’s latest is a radical, thrilling departure from the first two volumes of his Seasons Quartet. While Autumn and Winter took the form of short essays, this moving novel stylistically resembles his acclaimed My Struggle series… This is a remarkably honest take on the strange linkages between love, loss, laughter, and self-destruction, a perfect distillation of Knausgaard’s unique gifts.” — Publishers Weekly, starred review

Unlike Knausgaard's other books in the season series, this is not a collection of short musing ranging from q tips to apples, most of the book is a recounting of one day in Knausgaard's new child's life.It is a quick read but epic and dense in its understanding of psychology, society, and above all else, family. It is a justification of life while completely acknowledging the dark, all written to Knausgaard's new child.A beautiful and profound read that anyone would be honored to have, had their father written it to them."Life clatters within the living, with all their mentalities and psychologies, and when they die and the clatter within them subsides, it continues in their children, and one comes to understand that the clatter was the main thing, the clatter was the point, the clatter was life."

My favorite writer _ enjoying being inside his world- these Autumn Winter now Spring "seasonal" books moves.the focus from himself that we read about in the Struggle books to his relationship with the outside world _ this book is like a long letter to his youngest daughter about events happening right before and after her birth including his wife's depression. But also the day to day reality of parenting and.just living - - he always brings the mundane fully alive -

Wow. I was already a big fan and I was enjoying the seasonal "quartet", but this volume really threw me. The first 2 had set me up to expect more brief chapters detailing random/general facts & explanations of how the world works to his youngest, unborn daughter- but this one was a departure. In just under 190 pages and 3 long chapters (+ Epilogue), Karl Ove does what he does best depicting his day in minuscule detail to totally draw in the reader, but this time he also made a pretty big reveal. I was rapt and had to put the book down often because there are several utterly beautiful passages which I had to absorb, and then there were many more difficult passages, when he shows us how after putting off for months, he had to finally make a decision to save his wife and help her become well. It's a truly heartwrenching ordeal, and Karl Ove again paints himself as a pretty awful guy, but balances it out with all the time he puts into caring for the children while his wife is away and making mistakes like leaving the house with the baby but no money or milk.

The author’s voice -like a whisper in the ear - lures the reader into a world where the familiar and prosaic take on magical qualities. To share this author’s vision is to suddenly be made aware of new layers of one’s own experience of life. Truly a remarkable book; it makes me want to read more of his work.

A beautifully written short prose poem to his very ill wife and in utero and new born child.

You really get inside the narrator's mind. The translator did a good job. You also get to know a Norwegian; we know so little abourt Scandinavia. IRNMA DICKINSON

I am a Knausgaard fan and have read all his work. This is perhaps his best. It is quietly beautiful, deep, and heartbreaking. For those new to Knausgaard, start with this book! The insights and observations he makes about parenthood, his relationship to his wife, and life in general will stay with you. I will be re-reading this again as there is so much in this slim book to consider.

Karl Ove is father and mother and breadwinner! He revels in the mundane and is able to look into the mirror and give his readers an unprecedented level of introspection with such minute detail yet make it all very interesting. For his children's sake, I wish that he would stop smoking.

I have so many recipe books gathering dust that I was reluctant to buy another one, but this one is different. It isn't about creating "Pinterest worthy" meals. It isn't about carbs or calories. It is about feeding your family food that you know all the ingredients, that is delicious, and that three kids will eat. I can't say enough good things!!!

This is the BEST cookbook for easy meals that are both heathy and look like you spent a lot of time and effort on them. I do not cook or really enjoy it but have become quite the chef lately thanks to this easy to follow cook book. My husband and 3 year old are very pleased!

I love this book. We have tried a handful of recipes and they are delish. Any meal that makes 2 kids, a husband, and me happy is a winner and this book has tons!

Great book, we cook from here often. I like the meal planning. I just wish there were more "on the go" snack recipes.

Love this. I try my best to eat a clean diet. How to Feed a Family incorporates all the ingredients I use on a daily basis. The reviewer that said they are hard to find and pricey isn't shopping at the right stores. I find it all at Stop and Shop!!! Look in the natural food aisle. Love that Laura and Ceri integrate veggies and other healthy options into some of my favorite comfort foods. Who doesn't love Mac and Cheese...and add in sweet potatoes? Who would have thought...Yummmy!

I was really looking forward to the cookbook, but it wasn't a great one to be honest with you. Pretty disappointed in the dinner and lunch recipes (breakfast was decent, pancakes, fritatas, but nothing new). The dinners for the most part were not very kid friendly (fancy salads & rack of lamb etc). There were a few okay ones (lemon pasta, egg cups), but for the most part not what we were looking for. A few "recipes" for grilled cheese - changed by adding apples or grapes. Many of the baking recipes call for spelt flour, as opposed to WW or AP.The Popsicle recipes were okay, but I didn't want a $20 cookbook for 5 Popsicle recipes.I sadly returned this one to Amazon. If you are looking for a must-have, go-to wholesome family cookbook I can't say enough good things about the Weelicious ones written by Catherine McCord (also found on Amazon)

The recipes are easy to follow - nothing super fancy but full of good ideas on how to get more vegetables into everyone (the macaroni & cheese with kale bread crumb topping is great). The photo illustrations are beautiful and while the authors' kids are a little on the precious side, can you really complain about anyone whose proud of their kids?

These recipes really aren't realistic or helpful for a busy family with a family of young children - especially those with a milk allergy. We may grow into it in a few years but with a toddler, its just not helpful.

I have mixed feelings about Dear Heartbreak. I loved the premise and I think there really is a place for more books like these in YA. These were actual letters from real people, not vague questions answered. This book will help a lot of people across the board, whether it's to grieve a relationship, change your outlook on life, or get the hope you need. I think we need more exploration of real life situations. Teens need more guidance and reinforcement. Parents may not be willing to discuss these sorts of things with their children or maybe the children don't feel comfortable confiding in their parents about these sorts of ideas. I want more direct contact between authors and readers. It was hard to digest though. I wasn't excited to pick it up again and it was kind of like trudging through a marsh. It was heavy and I felt like I was forcing myself to get through it.*Thank you to Netgalley for this review copy*

3.5 starsAs someone who does not typically pick up anthologies, I was happily surprised with the stories and content that this one held. I also really liked the formatting and how it was written in the style of letters. This anthology is directed and promoted towards young adults and teens but to me, the contents of this anthology and the advice it contains seems beneficial to many. Heck, at twenty-seven, some of the advice I appreciated reading (even if it has been told to me, time and time again). This was a relatable read and I think it’s important because of the world that we live in. So many people struggle in silence and I think in some of these letters, people may be able to find some kind of answer or at least feel less alone.***Thank you to Raincoast Books for sending me an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review***

I adore the concept and introduction in Dear Heartbreak. Talk about an ingenious idea. How I'd like to write multiple letters to Heartbreak. And the teens in here do just that. And the authors answer. They answer with brutal honesty, with love, and with care. Both the letters and the responses are genuine, raw, and emotional. They bleed, they cry, they rage.

I loved the heartfelt honesty of each letter, AND of the responses from authors. I think everyone will be able to find at least one letter that speaks to their experience. The greatness of this piece is the warts-and-all truth of it that doesn't try to gloss over the difficulties of growing up with cliches or easy answers. I've never read anything else like it.

Review

Zogby's 'Power of Time Perception' is a worthwhile endeavour, and his thoughtful explanations and meditations have a wide appeal. - Publisher's Weekly"This book is the 'next level' in time management that many have been looking for" - Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review "You will never think about your day the same once you finish reading this book!" - Lucia Grosaru, Psychology Corner"The Power of Time Perception" will make you more aware of the impact of time on your livfe, as well as the opportunities to alter your current trajectory and make the most of it" -- Dr. Joseph S. Maresca, Hall of Fame Top 1000 Reviewer "Finally a book that focuses not on how to get more done in less time but rather how to live a full life. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject of why time seems to speed up and how to slow it down." -- Doug Erlandson, Top 100 Reviewers"A fascinating, humorous, and thought-provoking journey through the neuroscience and psychology of time perception. The author simplifies complex concepts and breathes life into them with real-world examples. It will change your view on time and how you use it" --Sarah Busby, Reedsy Editor Publisher's Weekly ReviewZogby shares the intriguing results of Time Perception and interviews with experts in the field. Having grown up in a civil war, Zogby escaped death on multiple occasions and witnessed the deaths of close friends; these experiences gave him an appreciation for how precious time is and a desire to somehow slow it down. Zogby begins by describing how people sense time, before delving into brain biology. He also discusses how time is limited to the speed at which the brain captures and processes sensory information. The middle chapters address the many factors that influence one's experience of time: among them, mindfulness, extreme alertness, emotional control, personality type, and the use of drugs. In the final chapters, Zogby delves into remembrance, "mental time travel," and the aging brain before concluding with thoughts on living in the moment and for a prosperous, long time. Zogby's endeavor is a worthwhile one, and his thoughtful explanations and meditations have a wide appeal. - Publisher's WeeklyMidwest Book ReviewThe Power of Time Perception is a counter proposal to the idea of time flying by, delving into the nature of how the brain perceives time's passage, how emotions or life experiences alter the experience of time, and how personal reality and time can both be altered through a series of techniques that anyone can master. Many books discuss time management; but few discuss the nature of the time being managed, or the mechanics of how to alter it. Readers who anticipate a self-help approach or time management guide alone maybe surprised and initially stymied by the healthy dose of supporting science and psychology behind these suggestions; but given how many lighter (and less informative) approaches are on the market, it's pleasing to see a book that intermingles self-help with science and delves into specifics at points where too many others would generalize. The result is no light discussion, but an in-depth read that pairs insights on evolutionary processes and the latest research with pointers on how readers can make the most out of time. This book is the 'next level' in time management that many have been looking for: a concrete approach that pairs insights on time perception with tips on how to alter and better handle time's challenges.-- D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book ReviewReaders' Favorite ReviewsThe Power of Time Perception by Jean Paul Zogby is an extremely thought-provoking and, in some ways, startling book about the fundamental nature and reality of time. Time is something most of us take for granted, not only in our daily lives, but as a fact that exists. In The Power of Time Perception, Jean Paul Zogby shows us that time is interlinked with space in fundamental ways and, even more surprising, that the concept of time itself is created by our brain and mind and may very well be the ultimate illusion in a certain sense. The book is divided into four clear sections: how we experience time, the factors responsible for our individual perception of time, time as experienced in relation to the past and future, and how we can manage or control time to make every second count when needed. This book is a rare find that draws upon various fields and combines the metaphysical, psychological, and neurological aspects of the perception and meaning of time.I loved reading The Power of Time Perception and, in fact, there is so much information to take in and ponder over that I would probably re-read certain sections again. I was very surprised to realize how much we take time for granted and think of it as a fundamental aspect of reality when, in fact, it may or may not be so. But what Jean Paul shows through this book is that one can learn to make every second count when needed and, basically, make the most of the life that is given. I also loved hearing about the research conducted in the neurological and scientific fields presented in this book. I could then apply this new knowledge to the metaphysical questions regarding time and everything made more sense. A very well researched book that I would highly recommend! -- Gisela Dixon for Readers' Favorite

From the Author

Do you often wonder why you feel you were 20 years old just yesterday?Do you wonder where all those years go?Are you struggling to make more time?I wrote this book because I am fascinated about time and how we perceive it. I have researched Time Perception for over 6 years now and I am eager to share what neuroscience has to say about that subject. In this book, you will read about some of the fascinating, and perhaps seemingly bizarre, experiments scientists have undertaken to understand how we perceive time. These range from putting rats on cocaine, and heating the brain to unbearable temperatures, to pushing students from high platforms, and making them watch nasty spiders! You will explore ways to how time flows in your mind, ways to use it more efficiently, and how to feel good about it rather than feeling a sense of frustration that it is quickly running out.My hope is that by the end of this book, you will have the tools to, in the words of the great poet Rudyard Kipling, "fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run." After all, we only live once and the least we can do is attempt to make every second count.

The most valuable commodity in the 21st century is TIME. "The power of time" by Jean Zogby is written with the intentions of providing an insightful look into how we should not attempt to manage time but to use it, in the best way we can.The book at first begins to discuss our understanding of what time is and how we experience it. Then it moves onto referencing the psychological perception of the discussing matter and how our brains perceive this valuable commodity in reality. Some factors influence our time experience, and it is important to live in the moment and in a way take control of the situation by discovering what kind of person you are and how to prevent time from slipping away.I really enjoyed the part where the author demonstrates mental time travel. I found the topic to be very novel. The approach and analytical debates within the subject were in excellent standing.Anyone reading this book will have no difficulty following through the steps of creating quality in their life. To make every second count I believe is a hard thing to do especially when you don’t find a second even to stop and make that change. This book, however, assists you in better applying this method and subsequently generating a happier life for the reader.I recommend this book to people that value their existence and seek quality in their life.If you liked this review, please don’t forget to share and like it!Written by Jeyran Main

I read this book waiting for the last chapter. Each chapter I got through seemed to say the same thing in a slightly different way. So many studies and redundant examples really slowed things down. However, in the last chapter I finally got what I came for. Variety is the spice of life. Anticipation is often just as pleasurable as the anticipated activity, if not more so. Routine and monotony cause time to seem to slip away. Live in the moment. Stop and smell the roses. Keep learning. Keep growing. Live a full life by making every moment count. Time is not money. Time is much more valuable.

Finally, a book about time that is fit for a philosopher or layman! I found this book easy to read, but chalk full of profound insights about how we understand and navigate this uniquely human construction we call “time.” Zogby has really done his homework here. He starts out with a history of time, literally, trying to understand how we have come to understand our perception of how time passes. He proceeds to expertly explore how we sense time moving quickly or slowly, depending on the context in which we find ourselves. But what I found most original and engaging was his discussion of how we can actively “take control” of how we experience time, providing concrete suggestions to help us along the way. For example, Zogby discusses the effects of emotions such as fear, anger, anxiety, on our experiences of time. He suggests that to make the most of our time, we must learn to live in the moment, to pay the most attention to the things that matter, and to revel in feelings of awe in the everyday moments of life.Zogby has written a thoughtful and inspiring book – Highly Recommended!

Often we hear that time is money and money is time. In his book, The Power of Time Perception by Jean Paul Zogby, the author debunks this supposed truism and philosophy. He successfully teaches the engaged reader, through a step by step easy to follow study, the value of time, how the brain interprets time and answering the age-old conundrum of why time flies when you're having fun or watched pot never boils. He also personalizes his study by helping the reader to identify what kind of person they are as it relates to being introverted or extroverted, how to maintain the health of the brain, the impact that geography has on the individual's impression of time and even down to various cultures and how those cultures relate to their attitude towards time.Through the use of various published studies, dynamic quotes from famous scientists and writers, a study into the anatomy of the brain, psychology, scientific facts (such as the 3 second window); this intensive study into the subject of time has provided the reader with a number of timely gifts. Those gifts include practical tips on how to be in the moment or the now, the use of meditation, being in the "flow", power naps, taking a walk, chewing gum, listening to good music eating the proper nutrients, etc.The Power of Time Perception is a quality, in-depth written book designed to reveal to the reader the reality that "time is more precious than money because it is our most scarce resource" and as such honor our lives by being in the moment."A slower and simpler life is a happier life."

The Power of Time Perception: Control the Speed of Time to Slow Down Aging, Live a Long Life, and Make Every Second Count Now by Jean Paul Zogby is a fascinating look at time, and our perception of time. Zogby examines time through many different filters, namely physics, biology, psychology and personal experience. Of particular interest to me was the cultural difference in how we treat and use time. The differences between Western and Eastern cultures are marked, and certainly impact humankind in interesting ways. Zogby also discusses how as we age, we tend to see time shrinking and going by more rapidly, which is probably true, because most of life's significant moments happen when we are younger, when we have time to anticipate them. With fewer events to anticipate, there is a perception of time flying by more quickly. With plenty of practical applications, and material that is presented in a clear and concise manner, this is an interesting and informative book.

From Booklist

Last seen in London Bridges (2004) chasing a terrorist, Washington, D.C., PD detective turned FBI agent Alex Cross is enjoying a much-needed vacation at Disneyland with his family when he's called in by the FBI to consult with the LAPD on a high-profile murder case. A-list actress Antonia Schifman has been slain, her face so badly cut up that she's almost unrecognizable. The murder isn't random; an L.A. Times gossip columnist has received a series of e-mails from a woman named Mary Smith, taking responsibility for the killing of Antonia, her chauffeur, and a well-known female movie producer. Cross studies the e-mails, which make reference to Mary's ordinary appearance and her fixation on the perfect families, particularly the children, of both women. When another prominent woman is slain, Cross is sucked into the case full time, jeopardizing the outcome of the custody battle he's involved in over his youngest son. As Cross studies the e-mails and patterns of the killer, he realizes he can't be certain of anything, even the gender of Mary Smith. The thrills in Patterson's latest lead to a truly unexpected, electrifying climax. Kristine HuntleyCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Yes! James Patterson finally makes a return to original form. After a dark age from "Roses Are Red" to "London Bridges" (minus "Four Blind Mice"), we finally see the light with "Mary Mary".This story literally feels like an Alex Cross novel again. The feeling, the writing, the mystery, and also the pacing are all just right. I love how we finally see Alex Cross taking on larger cases as an FBI agent and facing problems that I've been waiting for him to face. Like for example, the danger of being a cop (or FBI agent). There are some pretty powerful moments when we see Alex ask himself if he should retire from the life of chasing bad guys and be normal for once, for his kids. It really adds to the drama and the decision of what he will make. One thing about this story that really surprised me and actually made me cry, was the breakup between Alex and Jamilla (spoilers). I thought it was pretty heart breaking to read. While I didn't like their relationship in the previous novels, I did kinda warm up to them in last one and also a little bit in the beginning of this too. But that still doesn't mean I actually like the romance fully. But the point is that the breakup really surprised me. I found myself caring because there are some big hurts between the two. You can sense that Jamilla hates doing this to Alex and Alex doesn't want to lose Jamilla. It's a touching situation that really gets to me. But you also understand that it is for the best because the circumstances are different and they live in two different worlds. Maybe they could be together and maybe it could have worked. Now that is really powerful. But it also led to Alex and Kayla Coles finally getting into a relationship (yeah!). I'm so happy that happened! Another thing I really want to point out is a small moment when Alex talks to a fellow widow dad who last his wife. I found that moment to be really strong and interesting (consider that the sequel after this goes into Alex's quest to find his wife's shooter). We finally get what it is like for Alex to live everyday and go through that same pain. It sets up perfectly for that storyline, while also providing an emotional moment for this story too.And then we have the negatives. Which surprisingly, there aren't that many. The revelation behind the identity of the killer of this story isn't really done well. The sub-plots are not needed (I wonder why Patterson even uses them). Also, the ending is rushed and I wish he could have added a few more chapters to make it feel satisfying (you will know what I mean). But the one thing I really hate the most is what Patterson did with Christine in this story. I won't give it away, but it really ticked me off. I literally hate her character now. In fact, I'm more angry at Patterson for ruining such a great character that I grew to love from the previous novels. I'm still hurt from what "Roses Are Red" did."Mary Mary" is a return to form for the Alex Cross series and it corrects some of the mistakes made over the last few installments. We see some pretty touching moments and even finally see Alex get with Kayla (which I have been waiting for). I say that it is definitely worth your money and time to read.

Compared to some of the other Alex Cross installments, this one isn't half bad. It may not be as great as "Kiss the Girls" but it does well for a sequel in some areas.I guess what I like about this novel is the "feeling" that I get from it. It feels like an Alex Cross novel, just with a mix of something new. I like the fact that Alex is going to retire from the police force and move on from it, but is also being pressured by the FBI to join them. For once, we see Alex actually going through something that we all can care about. It isn't just about romance and hard breakups (you what I mean). Seeing John Sampson finally fall in love was a good change. The romance was okay and I thought Billie was an okay character. Another thing that did this novel justice was the introduction of a new character named Kayla Coles. I actually really like this character, including her friendship with Alex. But where the novel fails in some areas of the story itself. The villains are nothing special and the twists and turns are not good. And even though I do like the romance between John and Billie, I do think that it could have used some more chapter time. I mean, the ending has John and Billie marrying, but we never once see the proposal or any other development into that area. Also, Alex's relationship with Jamilla Hughes is not really all that convincing. While I do like the character herself, its the romance that I don't like. In fact, I'm hoping that Alex gets with Kayla for some reason, they seem to actually have chemistry. The "Four Blind Mice" is, in my opinion, an okay novel to the series. I think it is worth checking out.

I appreciate James Patterson's Alex Cross series for what it is...murder conspiracies with a powerful ringleader. I also understand the series has many limitations which have been covered in detail by other reviewers. My biggest problem with this book is that I realized Patterson left huge gaps in his narrative that require the reader to just accept things on faith. It is not enough to know who the villans are or even to establish their motives. I needed to know how they were able to make this series of frame-ups work. How were they able to plant DNA evidence at the crime scene? How were they able to mobilize the police or MP's on such short notice? How is it possible that someone not involved in the coverup didn't detect a pattern much earlier in this drama? How were they able to put the murder weapon back in the house without detection? How did these "victim soldiers" pass through the death row appeals process so quickly? Was every District Attorney and every police chief paid to look the other way? Too many questions left me unsatisfied and frustrated. It is as if Patterson had a general outline and didn't take the time or effort to flesh out his story.

“Maurice” by E. M. Forster is an English language literary masterpiece classic, written in 1913-14, revised in 1932 and revised again in 1959-60, but not published until 1971 after Forster’s death. One movie, following closely the story line of the book, was produced in 1987, with notable super-stars featured, including a young Hugh Grant. Though good and beautifully filmed, the movie is far less impactful than the book. The title of this review (“You can do anything once you know what it is”) is taken directly from the text at about 90%, with Maurice stating that philosophical gem to Scudder. There are 3 primary characters: Maurice, Clive, and Alec (Scudder), all beautiful, youthful, intelligent Brits. It is a story of secret gay love in the early 20th Century, just before the onset of World War I and takes place in England, still largely Victorian in its thinking and mores. What is particularly interesting is the sociological-historical-legal-psychological context in which this story of same sex coupling takes place. The book abounds with harsh criticism of British (indeed, world) attitudes, laws, and views of homosexuality, as it was considered then (as it still is now in many places in the world) a criminal act and or a psychological deficiency, even a mental illness; in short homosexuality was something despicable and in need of erasure. Christianity and the ruling intelligentsia take a big hit from Forster. Thus, his book takes a more direct approach to the topic of gay love than, say, Mary Renault does in her exceptionally good books of same-sex love in ancient times (such as the times of Alexander the Great), including “The Persian Boy” published in 1972.All characters are perfectly captured as representatives of class society in Britain, which in the early 1900s still dominated everyday life, but it was also obvious that class society was crumbling and on its way out, due primarily to its inherent ridiculousness and the rise of a more educated middle class. Nonetheless, Maurice’s eventual final choice of partner may even be more shocking to fellow characters in the story and to readers alike who have an eye to the past, insofar as Alec (Scudder) is “low-born”.It has a slight “Days of Our Lives” feel to it (in the soap opera sense), but that aspect does not detract or subtract from the power and beauty (or message) of the story. It’s a classic novel of course, a wonderful read, and now in 2016, some 100 years later, serves well as an historical reminder of the bad old days.A 5+ of course.

The book kept my attention from page one to the end. Forster had great insight into human nature and gave the characters believable personalities that made me want to continue reading about them. Homosexuality was taboo in his day, and sadly we have not come so far that it is no longer a state that people struggle with and fear being rejected for. Self-loathing and suicidal thoughts plagued Forster’s main character...100 years later, young men and women still harbour these feelings for the very same reasons.Spoiler Alert...Maurice ended up choosing Hope over Defeat, and that is a relevant message worth reading today.

I HAVE LOVED THIS BOOK FOR 27 YEARS. I WAS A VERY YOUNG MAN AND RATHER CONVENTIONAL WHEN I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS REMARKABLE GEM. THIS BOOKED SAVED ME, IT BECAME MY LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS. IT GAVE ME HOPE, I WAS SO MOVED BY THE STORY. IN 1988 I HAD KNOW IDEA THAT EDWARDIAN COULD TEACH ME ANYTHING, I WAS HAPPILY PROVED WRONG.

I was exposed to E. M. Forster in college and I enjoyed reading him and loved his characterizations and motivations. I didn't know at first that Forster was gay in a time when that was very problematic. Forster penned Maurice but could never publish it in his lifetime. After his death it came to light at a moment when momentum was beginning for gay rights. It defies the restrictive convention that 'gay' stories had to end in misery. Maurice has a happy ending, making Forster's point that happiness in love is attainable in any way. As usual, the story is peppered with Forster's cogent observations on class and the often silly conventions of society. It is rooted in a specific place and time so some readers may find it's descriptions somewhat dated but I think there is enough universality there to address questions we still ask.

Maurice is not an easy book to read... literally. The (beautiful) Edwardian language and dialogue posed some challenges for me. However, it gets easier as the story moves along and the final reward makes it well worth the small effort. Forster's outsider view in life leads to great insight of the three main characters of the novel. He takes a no holds barred approach in telling the story of homosexual love and class divisions in early 20th century England. While the intimate scenes in the book are only alluded to with words like "sharing"... the feelings are clear and have more impact owing to the lack of physical detail. This book is an important work in lgbt literature because it presents a happy (if implausible) ending for the protagonists at a time when homosexual acts were criminal. Forster dedicated this book "To A Happier Year"... and in writing Maurice he hastened its arrival.

Actually, I bought the book as a gift for a young writer who knew of Forster's "A Passage to India" --but not the excellent film version--but not this work that the author prevented from being published until after his death. He was quite closeted during his lifetime. It's a beautiful love story of two Oxford students who fall in love but are mindful of the societal (and British law) condemnation of homosexuality. It is not graphic nor did it need to be; neither was the somewhat recent film version with a young Hugh Grant as one of our protagonists. But it was charming what with its treatment of the privileged classes and the adoration of the other protagonist by a gameskeeper on the other chap's estate. When the class distinction melts away because mutual love and respect, we find Forster at his finest, that for him, love does conquer all. It certainly resonates with today's social mobility of the LGBT community whose championing of Constitutional guarantees of equal protection are bringing down state laws banning same-sex marriage. Forster would be proud.

O.k. Steve Martin is a very talented and funny man with a tendency at his best to be inspired and at his worst, sentimental. What you have here are examples of the two extremes. Roxanne, one of his inspired creations and LA Story, a turgid piece of sentimentalism with an occasional spark. I am english, twenty years resident in Spain. Writer and actor. I don't go for the crass sentimentalism of a lot of Hollywood product. (I know that LA Story was well received in the states) You might like it. Steve Martin has made a lot of squirm-inducing films in my opinion and this book shows him as a writer at his best and his worst.

One of the movies in this book I had seen and the other I had not. "Roxanne" I remembered as a wonderful movie, and I very much enjoyed being able to pick out my favorite parts and favorite lines in the book. "L.A. Story" is a very amusing satire and I have not seen the movie. At first, reading a screenplay is confusing, but I adjusted quickly and found the reading very enjoyable.

I am a big fan of both these movies - they have such funny and warm centers and Martin's humor is deceptively deep. It took him seven years to write L A Story and the number of in jokes prove the same. For those who don't know, L A Story is loosely (very loosely) based on A Midsummer Night's Dream and even has a scene from Hamlet it in (at the graveyard). Favorite line:Harris: You know, normally I don't like being around interesting people, because that means I have to be interesting.Sarah: Does that mean you find me interesting?Harris: All I know is that I find myself showing off when you're around, which is the idiot's version of being interesting.Roxanne is a pretty straightforward 20th century version of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac (if you havent seen Depardieu as Cyrano, run out now and rent it - I can wait). My favorite line from it is the scene where he comes up with 20 insults about his nose.Steve Martin has a way of being funny without being mean. And that means something. The same can be see in his later movies like Bowfinger (even though it was a bit uneven) and LA Story, in particular, sheds some light on his philosophical leanings as well!

I have been a fan of LA Story from the first viewing. Everythingabout the movie is solid, from the superb casting to the subtleand extremely witty script, and fine performances turned in by everyone. I disagree wholeheartedly with whoever wrote the review and admitted to being thickheaded enough to walk out half way through the movie. But, as we all know, a man with a pointy nose is a little more direct than a subtle slice of Martin insight and hilarious angelean social commentary/satire. Subtlety escapes some and these are the people who are running tosee horrible movies in droves. If you consider yourself funny or an intellect or both, see this movie.
