Having grown weary of writing about gang violence, drive-by shootings, and drug arrests, Corwin wanted "to find a way to write about the other children of South-Central, the students who avoid the temptations of the street, who strive for success, who, against all odds, in one of America's most impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhoods, manage to endure, to prevail, to succeed." He also wanted to show "how truly slanted the playing field remains, how inequality is built into a system touted as a meritocracy." Though 98 percent of the students in the gifted program go on to attend college, it takes a near superhuman effort for them to reach graduation day. In And Still We Rise, Corwin details exactly why. Los Angeles Times reporter Corwin offers a viscerally affecting glimpse inside the world of an inner-city high school. Hewing to the approach of his first book, The Killing Season: A Summer Inside an LAPD Homicide Division, he followed the seniors in an Advanced Placement (AP) English class from their first day of school in 1997 to graduation. Overcrowded, underfunded Crenshaw High School has a dropout rate of almost 50%. Notorious as the setting for the movie Boyz 'n the Hood and as home base for one of L.A.'s worst gangs, Crenshaw is located in the impoverished and crime-ridden South-Central district. The struggling students whose stories Corwin adroitly interweaves face trying circumstances: some have parents on welfare, in prison or addicted to crack; many work at part- or full-time jobs; several cope with the scarring effects of physical or sexual abuse. Yet most minority students in Crenshaw's "gifted magnet program" manage to get As and go on to college. Corwin succeeds admirably in avoiding the cliched image of inner-city schools, with wide-eyed, altruistic teachers and menacing students. For example, he describes Toni Little, the white AP English teacher (nearly all of whose students are black), as a volatile, histrionic personality who frequently involves students in her bitter ongoing battle with administrators. California voted to end affirmative action in 1997, and Corwin passionately argues that affirmative action programs are an imperfect but necessary measure to level a grossly uneven playing field. This gripping immersion into inner city school life makes the perfect companion read to Tracy Kidder's "Among Schoolchildren". From a nice, safe, concerned, caring enviornment, where the problems are understandable and manageable in "Among Schoolchildren"; to a place where success is measured not merely by acheivement but by the tremendous obstacles students must overcome merely to be in school, in this gripping, similarly styled work. The two books are a startling picture of the tremendous gulf of opportunity and enviornment at the spectrum ends of our society.I strongly recommend both books, to everyone; not just parents, teachers or those who are usually associated with "education" interests. "And Still We Rise.." is not merely a vision of a brutal social/educational reality that must be addressed, but a poignant drama, as well. The young people whose stories are followed are the heroes of the most brutal battles raging today; crime, drugs, racism, and a culture of despair and degradation. These are the best and the brightest ... they are forced to face obstacles that should be reserved only for those who have transgressed horribly against society.The incidental intrusion of the writer into this jouranlistic narrative is the only jarring note to be found in an otherwise seamless view. The unfortunate, even tragic circumstances that cause that intrusion, however, are understandable, from a human standpoint, even if they are inexcusable as viewed through the prism of journalistic purity.An emmimently readable, engaging work. Recommended.

Excellent read concerning student trials, tribulations and successes of students and teachers in South Central LA.Excellent insights revealed about lives of folks living in poverty areas.

I purchased this book simply because it was required for a School Social Work class I'm taking. I ended up finding it very interesting and highly recommend it. More people should educate themselves on the public education system in the United States!!

This is an extraordinary tale following children who, against all the odds, seem to find comfort and safe haven in their desire to learn. I was fascinated by the struggle to see the next step for some of these kids, however. Even though they clearly value the education they are getting, the giant leap from the struggles of a neighborhood High School to a distant College Campus seems to really define how hard it is for these kids to break the cycle of poverty and broken homes most have experienced.I am not an educator. I was motivated to buy this book after hearing it recommended on Imus. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and wonder what it will take to overhaul our dismal education systems.

Great book! Definitely will recommend this to others!!! A very rich story behind students of color in Los Angeles.

This book is very inspiring, and offers a great perspective for teachers and others who work with kids in inner city environments. Some chapters can be a little dense and a little political because it teaches a lot about affirmative action and other more political issues, but if you're reading this to learn, it's absolutely wonderful.

I lived in Suburbia my whole life and I heard about these kinds of stories all throughout my life. Corwin did an amazing job illustrating every student's life. These students go through so much to get intellectually stimulated and to have an education with their peers. I enjoyed how he also dedicated some chapters to the administration and the teachers and all the things that surround the students and the teachers lives -- Affirmative Action, the school, the city, etc. It was a bit confusing since the chapters are named after a student but in between are the daily class stories so it can be a bit confusing. But this is a definite recommended read.

I just about almost cried towards the end of the last chapter. I am sure if this was a movie I would cry watching it. The struggles these teenagers go through are what makes them want to strive in school. Some are in foster home to foster home and others were abused or in a deadly gang and changed to be a better person for his own life. I liked the character of Ms. Little as I read the second half of the book. She is a teacher who does care about her students being successful and preparing them to pass the Advanced Placement Exam at the end of the year. All-in-all, this book was a great read and I'm glad my teacher assigned it to me! Read it in 5 days with pauses in between to eat and shower and eat of course and going to my religious service.

She does what she sets out to do which is provide many many color plates of gorgeous examples to spur us printmaking lovers on to more explorations. I think this book is a bit light on technique considering the size of it. I'd have been happy if more of the space on the pages between the amazing color plates were covered with writing but after thinking it over I'm still giving it five stars. It doesn't claim to be the only book on the topic you'll ever need but at the very least as a lover of printmaking you'll want it.

This book has some nice things going for it if you are a beginner printmaker. It explains a wide variety of printmaking techniques, features some examples of each type, and interviews with various printmakers.On the other hand, despite what it says in the publisher's descriptive blurb, this book is in no way "perfect for artists " and in no way is it a "complete guide to materials and techniques". The steps given for various ways of making prints are very cursory. You would have to go beyond this book and find other sources to truly understand what each technique requires. The examples given are pretty but uninspiring, and the printmaker interviews, while being wonderful artists in their own right, are more like artists' statements about art and beauty, than discussions about particular methodology.It would have been more honest for the publishers to describe the book as an introductory guide to materials and techniques for on that level the book is perfectly acceptable and would have given the buyer the ability to make an informed choice. However to call it a bible is totally misleading and irresponsible, purporting by the use of that word that this book presents a definitive presentation of techniques. It most definitely does not. For the serious printmaker, look elsewhere for enlightenment.

The book's title says it all. This fairly massive tome really IS a (kind of) printmaking bible, and it DOES give a (fairly) complete guide to printmaking techniques. I say 'fairly', because what book could contain all information about such an enormous field? This book gives a great oversight, and lots of insight, in a wide range of printmaking techniques. It's clearly written, and beautifully illustrated. I love it.

A gorgeously produced book (Chronicle Books ALWAYS does an exceptional job) full of fantastic information and awe-inspiring work. As a printmaker of 20 years I simply cannot believe it took me this long to buy this book.

I am a fellow printmaker, and this book is extremely helpful in illustrating the process and explaining step by step how to do a variety of techniques. The book itself looked beautiful....no rips or tears, very good condition. The shipping was fast - it only took about 2 days- and overall i am just very happy

bought this book as a companion for a printmaking class. I don't know how I would have navigated the class without it. Every technique has a history, fabulous photographs, artist commentary, and step by step guides on how to complete each process.

This book is super brief and goes over basics. It's good for a beginning printmaker. But that's it. If your taking college level printmaking I would probably invest in a better book

Love it. Very focused on c sharp ver 6. Made new futures looks very very easy. This is just an intro book . If you really want to know how deep, dark and complicated c-sharp is, try any video by. Scott Allen for Pluralsight . Best teacher ever who don't compromise.

An outstanding book for learning C#, without trying to be a complete guide to every small detail as so many other programming books out there, as Mark writes in the intro:"There are many C# books, some, more than a thousand pages long, that aim to be comprehensive references to the C# programming language and the .NET Framework. This book is different. [...] I will point out the cool corners and gotchas of C# so you can impress colleagues and employers and quickly get productive. Rather than slowing down and boring some of you by explaining every little thing, I assume that if a term I use is new to you, then you know how to Google it..."This approach, and mindset, makes the book a much better read, without compromising the essential parts of C# that you need to learn.The book starts from the very beginning, and will allow people with very little programming experience to pick up this book and just follow it step by step to learn C# 6. While at the same time enabling experienced C# programmers to read over the basic parts fast only stopping to get the "What's new in C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0"-parts. And enabling a relatively fast read for catching up on the direction .NET is going.The structure, examples and small anecdotes in the book represents the fact that Mark is an excellent teacher as well as author. Having had Mark as instructor on a C# course, i can say this book represents a vast knowledge of C# and how to teach it.

I can't give this book 5 stars due to some minor issues. For example, some of the Visual Studio screen shots are not accurate because as Microsoft updated .NET Core 1.0 RC2, they also pushed updates for Visual Studio. This is minor and for the most part the author did a good job of annotating where code was going to change by the time .NET Core reaches RTM next month. This book didn't attempt to go nearly as deep as the Wrox publication on C# 6 and .NET Core 1.0 but that's a good thing because .NET Core has been changing too fast. As a result, the Wrox book has far more errors in it.This book also has some cool extras like a section on the .NET Portability Analyzer (Visual Studio extension) and managing source code on GitHub. Grab this book now and hold off on buying the in-depth 1500 page reference until well after .NET Core has been officially released.

Painfully little .NET Core from what I would have liked. Sigh.

To me, this is the best tutorial-type book to gain a broad overview of C#. It provides an added bonus of providing an introduction to .NET Core, part of Microsoft's revamping of the .NET Framework.I've tried to learn C# via several books, but the others gave too many details or had poor example programs and became ponderous, boring, or discouraging. To me, this book is easy to read and follow, does a good job of presenting the various necessary aspects of C#, and uses interesting examples and good repetition so that you end up with a good foundation from which to start writing serious programs and dig deeper as necessary. The author's inclusion of links to other materials at the end of each chapter help with starting that deeper dive.Though I gave up trying to learn C# via the other books I tried, I have no doubt that I will continue all the way through this book. Using it is truly enjoyable and encouraging.

Really excellent book for anyone who wants to learn C#. Clear, concise examples with easy to reproduce steps that even those new to C# can follow and haven't spotted any mistakes which is great! I think as long as you have some basic programming knowledge of another language, you can pick this book up and follow it through without any problems.The only thing I would say is that if you are very familiar with C#, and you are looking for a book to tell you what's new in version 6 or .NET Core 1.0, then the majority of this book will be revisiting old territory for you. But if you haven't spent much time yet with C#, then this is a really good book covering all the basics plus some advanced features like multi-threading etc.

I am a total novice to the art of Development and started reading this book with some trepidation. However, I was blown away by how the author builds you up from the initial stages of writing your own script through to more advanced concepts. I would highly recommend this to anyone starting out in the subject or like me, want to see what all the fuss is about! It is obvious that the author is an experienced teacher/trainer as his presentation of subjects and the methodical approach he uses throughout the book is second to none. It is a must for anyone interested in this subject.

i have written one review for all 8 of the author's books. in order to avoid redundancy, i am only going to post my review on the very first book's amazon page and leave this note as a link on the others.if you're going to buy the books, buy them all. you really do need to read them all to make sense of the information, even though the author insists the books are stand-alone. no, they are not. what i have written above can help you fit the information into its proper order, and from there learning to do hypnotism with only this series is very much possible if you PRACTICE A LOT and follow the instructions the author gives you in the series.4 stars. would be 5, but my gripes are such that i spent an inordinate amount of time rereading the info and mindmapping it in order to make full sense of it. the author writes a LOT, and practical hypnosis requires simple understanding and quick execution, which is defeated by the series' verbosity.for the rest of my review, see the very first book in the series.

This is the seventh book on hypnosis that this author has written. Personally, as a person that knows hypnosis, I can tell you that this series is amazing! For months, I have been waiting for this book. It has taken a while since its announcement. Do yourself a waver is needed and invest $6.93 in getting all the books and learn all the ins and outs of hypnosis. This author is one of those outstanding gems that you hardly come across.This book, Escaping Cultural Hypnosis, deals with one of the most profound issues since humankind have existed. Breaking the slavery chains of politics, religion and academia is no easy feat. Understanding the processes that is used for enslaving people is the most important step needed for breaking free from this type of slavery!Now about the bookThe truth is that the book is so full of data that is quite frustrating and depressing. Why? Well you might not expect the so many dirty and nasty tricks that are used in so many flanks simultaneously! On the other hand do not expect any hypnosis scripts because just knowing the source, the content and the methods used in covertly programing your mind is quite liberating. So the entire book is a de-hypnotic script by it self.However, there is a big obstacle to deprogramming yourself or someone else. You and anyone is required to do what most people hate, think. Most people loves to have a qualified superior external authority to tell them what and when to do everything! Therefore, most people do enjoy slavery.This is an awesome book but due to its content it is not a pleasure read. It is an eye opening read!

Speaking strictly on the quality of information, this book is excellent. All of RH's books are.I don't give it five stars because, personally, his snarky prose gets old when every other sentence is a sarcastic aside. Once in a while is entertaining, but I found it overkill.

Terribly written. Big on promise but does not deliver.This guy's ego is so huge it eclipses the promise of anything worthwhile to come. Just like every annoying online rant of a marginal thinker convince he has the secrets of the universe. I tossed it after 20 pages. Not worth the 99 cent download.

Gives you all the scoop. The rogue hypnotist shows how terrible, how sadit is that most people on planet earth are in a constant hypnotic state ofvarious levels - and therefore can be manipulated for good or bad.And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This is a fascinating read, really brilliant insights into the 'human condition'. Should be required reading for high school students. A great critique on just how thoroughly we're brainwashed. Imagine a world where each person self-affirmed rather than letting those with their own agendas dictate our feelings and thoughts about ourselves. Minor complaint: wish someone had done a decent final editing job....too many typos.

I'm in training right now to be a Clinical hypnotherapist. A lot of what I'm reading for school is very dry. This, however, really keeps your attention and is funny. I was a little put off by how thr author spoke about clients, but that's probably just me.
