An instant favorite and a book that I already know I will read again soon. The book dives into simple strategic concepts and really explores the complexity behind them. The book is divided into two, Static states and Dynamic states, or the states of power that are advantageous for a company to achieve, and the dynamic way to go about creating those advantages. For people who work with small businesses, the chapter on Counter-Positioning was especially interesting, as it explains how to address competition with large incumbents. A must read!
An excellent discussion of the sources of strategic and competitive advantage for modern business. Recommended read to understand the business strategy underlying high tech companies -- GAFA, Netflix, Cloud/SaaS leaders -- especially. A helpful "book club" read for new managers of growing companies, as well.
Some of the basic ideas here: competition, economy of scale, barrier of entry, network effects etc should be familiar to most readers interested in strategy and investment. However, the author's analyses reached a whole new level of scientific vigor. At the same time, he organized them into an easy to follow system, and clearly demonstrated their critical importances to business and investment. Truly an admirable achievement.

Great primer to Strategy for all. Good read and foundation for thinking in terms of 7 powers. Good case studies for each power.
7 Powers provides an insightful and pragmatic way to understand the basics of business strategy. Far too many approaches that have been hyped are too academic to be easily understood and many others are too simplistic to be useful. This book is very helpful in describing both a static and dynamic view of what power is and how to develop positions of ongoing competitive advantage. Having a shared framework and a way to talk about strategy among the senior team in a company is essential. Many companies struggle on an ongoing basis because they fail to agree on what their source of power is and never develop a consistent and effective strategic gameplan.I found this book easy to read and the case studies and examples both interesting and on point. Highly recommended.
This book perfectly articulates the critical strategy issues I have learned over four decades of investing in tech companies. I give a copy to every startup I work with. It is concise, says a lot in a short time, and gets better as it goes on.
