Why do we teach children about history (or literature or any of a number of subjects)? What is the best way to teach these subjects? How do we know if we have taught them successfully? Karen Glass explains the choices facing all of us who have the responsibility of teaching children. When we choose to present or not present certain topics, even more so when we choose to present topics in particular ways, we are making philosophical choices whether we know it or not. These choices have a profound effect on the way each child views the world.Karen explains that today's preferred methods of teaching resemble the old story of the blind men and the elephant, as we present children with disconnected bits of information without ever showing them the whole. Without that view of the whole, children do not come to care about the subjects of their studies or to care about the process of learning about the world around them. There is a better way, and it is not new but yet it is fresh and lively. The original classical educators, back in the distant past, aimed at pursuing virtue through "synthetic" learning. (Synthetic meaning all the parts together, like the whole elephant.) Charlotte Mason, back in the early 20th century, studied the principles espoused by classical educators and found ways to apply them with her own students. Our job is to do the same today, if we want to equip students to pursue truth and virtue. "There is nothing quaint, nostalgic or old-fashioned about a desire to educate in the classical tradition. It is a radical thing to do. We do nothing less than demand that chaos resolve itself into order, simply by saying, 'There is truth and I want to know it.'"
I've been researching different educational philosophies and by far this is my favorite book so far. The author address misconceptions about a Charlotte Mason education versus classical education (as typically applied today) and shows how CM is classical in accordance with how that term has been used throughout history. This book was easy to understand yet incredibly thought provoking and it really excited me to grow in understanding how all "subjects" are connected through a biblical worldview. I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone wondering how CM is different from classical education and wanting to understand the CM method (which it turns out stems from a biblical worldview).
Twelve years ago I stumbled upon Charlotte Mason amongst the many methods of homeschooling. For years many could point to the effectiveness of her methods, but despite the results, there seemed to be a feeling that her methods were a sort of 'Claasical-Lite'. Not for the serious educator or student. Now, thanks to Karen Glass, there is evidence that Charlotte Mason knew her classical education and drew from its roots her methods and principles.Beyond that there is so much knowledge to be gathered here for anyone curious about how and why we learn as humans and how our understanding about education has changed over the years.Well written and a beautifully executed argument for a traditional classical education.
This book is excellent. It might be a little confusing for a person who has no familiarity with Charlotte Mason, but Karen does a great job at filling in those blanks that might otherwise be missed if someone who is unfamiliar with Miss Mason reads the book. My copy is written all over and highlighted. I pretty much wanted to add almost the whole book to my common place book of quotes. I will be reading it again this month. I loved it so very much. I really appreciated the quotes from many of the original Classical founding fathers to help support the assertion that the Charlotte Mason method truly is a classical philosophy. I believe Miss Mason made the Classical model more attainable for the current culture and also put a greater emphasis on stepping back to allow The Holy Spirit to lead the student as that student is learning. I appreciated learning about how the term "Science of Relations", as Miss Mason says it, is really the Classical Educational philosophy of "unity of knowledge". It really brought the whole philosophy into perspective for me.
I wish I had read this book in college. It summarized the classical ideal that knowledge can only be attained with a spirit of humility, and that knowledge is meant to educate for character. Knowledge of truth, beauty and goodness should lead to right action. The author shows what the classical fathers believed, and how Charlotte Mason understood and adapted it to her time. Interestingly, her time is not unlike our own, and so this book lays a foundation for anyone serious about education. I Highly recommend this book
What a joy to read! Compelling from the start, if you wrestle with classical vs. Charlotte Mason methodologies, do so no more. I absolutely loved this book. We have homeschooled from the start in “both styles†and I’ve long contemplated how CM is different from classical based on modern definitions. Well, that appears to be my problem. This book will challenge you to ponder what you think you know about classical education and those that have come before us. If you’re caught up in the modern neoclassical movement and find it lacking in your homeschool, I enthusiastically encourage you to “consider this†book! Karen Glass has defined for me what I knew in my heart but could not articulate for lack of knowledge. I will definitely continue this journey to discover more about CM and classical education and strive for virtue, humility and synthetic thinking!
Absolutely loved this. This book spoke to me more than just about any other book I've read on education. This brought Charlotte Mason into focus for me like nothing else has. I used to think CM wasn't quite my cup of tea. I was wrong.
