Review
Miss Suzy, a squirrel, is routed from her idyllic treetop home by a bunch of ruffian squirrels; moves into an attic dollhouse; welcomes and mothers some abandoned toy soldiers; and then regains her first, beloved home with the soldiers' help. The book's appeal is in the coziness of the homes gentle Miss Suzy creates and in Lobel's expressive crosshatch illustrations. (Copyright 2005 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston. Miss Suzy, a gray squirrel, lives "in the tip, tip, top of a tall oak tree"-until a throng of mean red squirrels displaces her. She retreats to a dollhouse and meets some toy soldiers who help her reclaim her house. Lobel's pen-and-ink drawings with a burgundy wash alternate with full-color pictures in hues bold and rich or delicate and ethereal. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. A 50th-anniversary edition finds this story about a squirrel who loses then regains her cherished treetop home still winsome and gorgeously illustrated. Miss Suzy, who loves to cook and clean, is kicked out by a rowdy band of male squirrels. (Picture book; ages 2 to 6) --NY Times, December 7, 2014.

Very fond memories from my childhood I am legally blind. My grandmother used to read me this book when I was a child. She read it to me so many times, I had the entire book committed to memory and I could recite it Word for Word. While she was reading it to me, if she got a word wrong, I would correct her. I still have the original copy of this book my grandmother read to me while I was a child. And when I saw this available on Amazon, I Purchased two copies. One to keep for myself as a spare, and one to give to my goddaughter so she could appreciate it well her mother reads it to her the way I appreciated having it read to me by my grandmother. Checking Amazon now, I see this book is not available in print. Last year for Christmas, my sister gave me her USB thumb drive with a digital Animated copy of this book on it. That was one of the most thoughtful gifts my sister ever gave me, because she remembered it was special to me from my childhood. Just a silly book about a little squirrel trying to survive, but it had an ever lasting effect on me.
I read Miriam Young's "Miss Suzy" as a young boy back in the early 1970s, and I still have great memories of the book -- both the story and Arnold Lobel's evocative, crosshatch drawings. It was a favorite of mine, though long out of print, so imagine my surprise when I discovered that Purple House Press has reprinted it. I had to buy it for my three daughters. Sometimes nostalgia betrays you: when you revisit it, it falls short. But not this book. There is indeed a reason why I remembered it after so many years. As for this reprint, it is very nice. It is no sloppy reproduction. Rather, the book is a quality product from cover to cover, and, unless my memory truly fails, I think it is a very faithful reproduction of the book I read as a child. It has given me much renewed pleasure to read it to my daughters, and it has become a frequently requested book. In fact, I have seen my 5-year-old daughter flip it open on many occasions on her own -- she cannot yet read, but knows the story by heart and (like me) loves Lobel's drawings. Pick this one up to add it to your child's collection while it is still in print.
I still remember being 4 years old and listening to my parents groan about having to read this book to me for the 100th night in a row. I loved that Miss Suzy enjoyed doing her housework and I loved that she used whatever she had to fix up her house. Living in a beautiful dollhouse mansion was also a bit of a dream come true although I admit that as a kid, I was a little disappointed that she returned to her home in the end. Now I have two daughters and can't wait to share this book with them. I hope they have the same connection to the book I do.
This is one of my favorite children's book. It shows kindness, good work ethic, and loyalty. Miss Suzy keeps going when she experiences hardship, and is still kind to others. I read this to my daughters, and highly recommend this to you. It is a very sweet story.
I had this book when I was a child back in the late 1960s. I have always remembered it and was happy to find it on Amazon. It is a wonder story of a wrong made right by hero's that came to her rescue and I loved the details describing the tree and doll house Miss Suzy lived in. Worth the money for a trip down memory lane.
What an adorable book. I remember this from when I was little. Was so wonderful to get to read to my baby. Books are so fantastic and provide so much for children. I have so many wonderful memories of being read to. Art work is so wonderful.I think the reason I always wanted a small cozy house was because of Miss Suzy and her little acorn cups. :)
I was given a copy of this book when I was a young child. Miss Suzy, the title character, always reminded my of my grandmother--always cooking or cleaning and keeping a very tidy house. I don't know what happened to my copy but when I had my own children I wanted them to have the book; I wanted them to experience the same emotional connection to the story that I had as a child and use it to tell them about the great-grandmother they never knew. I recommend this book for anyone who like fictional animal stories with a great main character and heroes that save the day.
I loved this book as a child. One of the greatest treasures my parents gave me was a well-stocked library of books. I had several books I read over and over again and "Miss Suzy" was one of my very favorites. My imagination would always take flight when I read this book and I used become really involved in the life of Miss Suzy and the toy soldiers.I have searched far and wide for this book, and this was made even more challenging by the fact that - eventhough I knew the story by heart - I couldn't remember the title of the book or the author's name. I just remembered the little squirrel who was driven out of her beloved home by a band of mean squirrels. She had to take refuge in a little dollhouse and became friends with a band of toy soldiers. Imagine my excitement when, upon browsing through the internet one day, I discovered the title of this book and that Amazon carries it!!I have since read this book to my children many times and we all enjoy it. Rediscovering "Miss Suzy" is like finding a friend that you thought you lost and I am happy to be able to share this story to my children.
