Good for reading various stories of becoming a family in unconventinal ways. Very short read. If you are looking for advice or reference then this is not the book for you. However, during our struggles to become parents I found it refreshing to read success stories and that is all this book is about.

I wrote "Intended Parents: Miracles Do Happen" because I was looking for someone or something to validate the feelings I was having as I was going through the surrogacy process, and I couldn't find anything. I found that most of the books on the market were either from a process or ethical point of view. I thought that if I was going through the maze of feelings associated with surrogacy then others must be going through them too.I also wrote "Intended Parents: Miracles Do Happen" because I wanted to let people know that there is an alternative to adoption or childlessness.If you are trying to find out what types of feelings you might have going through the process or you want to validate the feelings you are having while you are going through the process, this book is for you.This book is also for you if you want to learn about surrogacy or if you want to explain to your friends and family why you are choosing to go down the path of surrogacy.

I like other readers could not put the book down. I read the entire book in about 3 days. I am remarried and my husband has no children. I am fortunate to have given birth to my daughter (who is now 14) but my husband has no children of his own, so we were trying to have one together. After trying for over a year and several tests, etc., I have a condition in which doctors have advised me not to become pregnant. We have been fortunate to have a surrogate offer to carry the baby for us. I have read this book and was truly touched by Sandra's story. I even emailed her today and told her how much I appreciated her book and received an email back from her the same day. I was totally impressed with the book, her email, and everything. I am letting my surrogate read it now. I hope my journey is a successful one and I hope someday I will be able to tell my children how lucky their father in I was in finding a surrogate and having the information available such as Sandra's book. Thanks again!

There perhaps could have been a little more on the transition from the railroad side, especially why several major railroads hung on to steam so long, but overall it's a must read for any railroad historian.

ALCo, Baldwin, and Lima all failed to successfully convert their operations from the manufacture of steam locomotives to those powered by diesel. Churella covers the many reasons why EMD succeeded and why the old line makers (as well as new comer F-M) failed. GE's successful entry to the market is also covered. Summary: EMD offered a good product at a good price with good field support; all the old makers failed in one (or all) of these areas with their diesels.I would only have liked to have seen more details on the costs to purchase, operate, and maintain comparable models from the various makers. Only a few brief examples are given in the text.The conversion to Kindle format was not the best, but since the book is no longer in print, this is a very useful and convenient substitute.

I work in an organisation that has been trying to manage major technical and structural changes for years, and failing dismally (after ten years of fairly strenuous effort it is pretty much in the same position now as then). After reading this book I had a much better understanding of the reasons why that can happen. The guy who wrote this book knows how to research his field and explain it to a layman without boring him to death. This is an excellent case study for anybody with an interest in managing complex organisations and technology.

More than 30 years later, there are more of those hot spots around the world than ever, and they're getting hotter every day. Globalization, standardization, and the high-speed innovations of our current information age are transforming urban centers from London to Los Angeles to Lagos, and more places are becoming more urban, and at a faster pace, than ever before. Mutations is an eye-popping atlas-cum-analysis of this new urbanization, and much of it is composed of essays and meditations (from a variety of contributors) on the 21st-century international City (often un-)Beautiful. Most of them are written in language that will be familiar to readers of Koolhaas's past books: in other words, dense, abstract, and chock-full of references to Foucault, Deleuze, and Guattari. If you like that sort of deconstructivist yammering, great; if not, the major small-type essays are best sampled (or, better, skimmed) one at a time, interspersed with the many other more accessible elements of the book that truly do add up to a vivid and fascinating mosaic of postmodern urbanism. From Koolhaas and Harvard Design School's Project on the City come two engrossing and wholly straightforward explorations: one of the Pearl River Delta, which China has designated as a zone of unrestricted capitalist experimentation, and whose five major urban centers have consequently exploded overnight in all sorts of instructive and often frightening ways; and another of the chaotic, congested and Blade Runneresque megalopolis of Lagos, Nigeria, whose patterns of growth, housing, and commerce defy all conventional wisdom on how cities should develop. There's also a bounty of excellent (and often astonishing) statistics on all aspects of urban growth; a "snapshots" section of phenomena from cities all over the globe; a completely spot-on (and unintentionally funny) analysis of the evolution of shopping as the last truly unifying urban public activity (and the subject of Koolhaas's next full-scale book); and a trenchant look at Kosovo as ground zero in the first major war of the Internet age. (It should be noted that there's a separate section on the U.S., which with all its soulless, tacky consumerist excess gets the drubbing it usually can expect from the European intelligentsia, although the irony here is that more and more of newly urban Europe is starting to look like newly urban America.) Mutations was developed in connection with Harvard Design School's Project on the City, an ongoing graduate-level analysis of "issues related to the urban condition." Year-long investigations have tackled such subjects as the impact of shopping on the city; Lagos, a massive, sprawling West African city that is highly functional despite a lack of infrastructure; and systematizing the structures and relationships in the prototypical Roman city. Results from these projects are gathered here along with a couple photo essays and short profiles of specific places from Pristina to Benelux. Interspersed throughout are a multitude of statistics about the current state and future of the city, presented in a captivating, highly graphical format. The whole does not cohere, and the reader will quickly turn to whatever is of greatest personal interest. But at the end of the day, the various views do coalesce into a portrait of powerful forces of our making but beyond our control: the modern city. As a result, this book is highly recommended for general cultural studies collections as well as all architecture/urban planning collections. This book was a required textbook for an urban planning class I took at college. I was very disappointed with the book overall. The photographs were very nice, but the text was utterly confusing, and difficult to follow. I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person, but I could not grasp most of what the authors were trying to say. The only parts of the book I enjoyed was the sections on the United States, which covered urban sprawl, gangs in cities, generic, look-alike architecture, etc. The rest of the book left much to be desired. The other students in my urban planning class agreed with my opinion of the book. Nobody seemed to get much use out of it except for the professor.

Whether you may find the concepts proposed not suitable, every prospective or practicing architect, designer or urban planner must be aware of the latest tendencies of thought in order to be the best-educated he/she can be.The Pearl River Delta investigation is impecable. For the "reasonably intelligent person" that wrote a comment above, it is a shame that you overlooked the whole analysis on shopping, perhaps because you are so immersed in it in the USA that you cannot see the forest for the trees.I agree that the language is dense and often martian-like. This is the case of the introductory essay "Telegram from nowhere". But read between the lines. Reading is re-reading said Joyce. You will find a very smart concept regarding the architecture built for the media.This book is all about cities in different parts in the world. It helps a lot if you are a culturally aware person. If you have had contact with diverse forms of living and thinking, may I highly suggest you get hold of this book. If you are not, you may either feel that the text is just wobbling on things you cannot be empathic with, or you may be on your way to becoming a more educated human being. And do not think by any means that this is a meek and mild pro-globalization text. This book is just rasing questions and proposing concepts, like all masterpiece limit themselves to do.

The book creates an exciting panorama of our urban spaces. It is similar to the first book published by Zone Books, which also uses photos and essays. I think the book is best viewed as "book art". It repesents the urban experience as overwhelming in a somewhat distanced way. Keeping in mind that it focuses with an almost bleak view of cities and consumer culture(we don't see a lot of pictures of parks, clean streets, or "nice" things about cities), I still recommend it.

This ridiculous book is nothing more and nothing less than a sad example of the disdain these authors feel for the world at large and for their poor readers in particular. Riddled with typos, filled with pictures of the poorest quality and utterly devoid of any original ideas, the book falls back, again and again, on worn, political cliches and pompous, unnecessarily complex phrasings that serve only one purpose: to conceal the fact that there is absolutely nothing of worth or merit being said here (beyond the incredibly, utterly astounding insight that cities, third world cities especially, are growing pretty darn fast!) At certain points it seems that even the writers can't follow their own ramblings. One particularly confused contributor (McKenzie Wark) writes " . . . technologies enclose, they count and rank what they enclose." Then, four sentences later, he/she writes: "Technologies do not enframe. There's no enclosure . . ." And that is about as coherent as that writer gets. One can only conclude that these people never expected anyone to actually read their book, since they obviously didn't take the time to read it themselves. Thank you Rem Koolhaas and your band of incompetent contributors for wasting my time and money on this utter disgrace of a book.

At first it might look as "just another crazy object" from Koolhaas... but when getting into it you discover it says all those things that you emerging architect, or architecture student have been thinking about lately. From Globalization to the soul of the cities. Excellent. It puts into place the concepts of Globalization and Shopping together with the position of architects and architecture related to them. A while after reading it you realize it's not far away from "Towards a New Architecture" by Le Corbusier... it's another era book, but the fluxes travel among the same envelopes, using Rem's concepts.

this book is packed with info. some of it is relatively hard to get at (your eyes are likely to glaze over at the reams of essays formatted in a narrow, sans-serif OCR-esque font) but the content and data is pretty good. it looks very nice in your bookshelf, but when hitting it up for a re-read, you may find yourself cursing the designers' decisions to go with form over function, IMHO.

I got the book for Kindle in order to be able to see the size font I wanted, and to start a library that was easy to store. BUT what use is a book you can not read? The type is fine. The font I can change in that. But much of the book references pictures or charts or appendixes that appear to have been small photos, that will not increase in size and can NOT be seen. The writing on and in and under these items is too small to see. Enlarging the entire screen on a computer screen doesn't help. Those areas remain tiny AND blurry!

With the kindle version, the text is fine, but the charts, diagrams, and other pictures are very difficult to see

I am dumb when it comes to things like this type of book but it explains things and it shows you in a way that you can learn from it. I find it a good book for references and to learn.

This is the book we all wished for when we started building electronics. Simon Monk is covering the basics in a easy to understand fashion. He is not stuck in the past, but introduce you elegantly to the Arduino and raspberry Pi world. A highly recommended book!

The author writes very clearly and although in a previous life I had considerable experience with electronics, I still found it very useful. It has a "seat of the pants" quality to it which makes it very readable and agrees with my own past work experience. I recommend it.

As Old retired electrician playing with electronics as a hobby this is a great book. Even for those learning. I want to get more books like this one.

Teaches by doing. Needs a little more theory or supporting web site. Projects were fun. Overall worth the effort to read and get supporting parts.

Projects and general information are bringing newer micro computers together with "found" objects in my project boxes and discard pile. Finally a book that makes the creative juices flow, even for a old tinker'er (65 years of tinkering). I guess have not seen it all. Pictures are great and writing style works for all experience levels without scaring off the novice or old hacker. One of the best I've seen.
